WLOX apparently had been getting some inquires about USM Hattiesburg and about an hour ago the on-air anchors actually asked anyone "in authority at USM" watching their broadcast to please call the station.

Au contraire, Hattiesburg campus closing for at least Monday and possibly Tuesday is listed at http://www.usm.edu/about/emergency.html?PHPSESSID=bcddb796a61d954374066592fb68306a.  The home page link is  just non-intuitively named, "Southern Miss Closings" (rather than Hattiesburg campus, e.g.)."  On the Home page, look for the link in the upper right hand corner, just above the Gulfpark closing link.

What about info for students who cannot leave campus?

PS, I hope the web folk rethink the picture of a USM student "braving the gusts" during Hurricane Lilli.  The people killed so far by Katrina weren't cautious, and I don't want to suggest any stunts to our students.  I'll try to contact I-Tech.  JL

Residence life staff will be making contact with students on campus.

Thanks Jameela, that link wasn't there earlier, I'm glad they updated it.

As for the post on students on campus, they should rely on Resident Housing staff for information

PPS,  I sent a note to web_questions@usm.edu, which appears to be the address for the webmaster.

Better safe than sorry.  JL

I trust Googler, but can anyone else confirm this?  If it's true, it seems to reflect very badly on the USM administration.

FYI, I was not the poster of the message above about the "inquiries" or "on air anchors".........

Thanks for the trust, USM Sympathizer. The WLOX on-air anchor indeed did make the statement seeking someone in authority to contact the station, which is what really stuck with me. WLOX had been running information on other Hattiesburg-area closures, so it was logical for there to be inquiries about the status of operations on the Hattiesburg campus.

Based on the condition of Southern Hall last Spring, I would seriously wonder how it would fare in this Hurricane. The foundation was crumbling, the Student Printz newsroom leaks water whenever a hefty thunderstorm passes through and because the building is suported by it's brick exterior, there are areas where the building is falling in opposite directions and exterior walls have to be propped up by 2x4s.

Now, I'm no engineer, but if the building is not in much better condition at this time, doesn't that mean there is a strong possibility that it could atleast suffer serious structural damage from the storm? Especially if the reports that wind speeds in excess of 100 MPH are expected in Hattiesburg as early as tonight are correct?

I'm sure that whoever gave instructions for the University's Emergency Procedures to be posted on the website was well-intentioned.  However, the document is seriously out of date in terms of contact names and spokespeople.  Perhaps a link to Babb's List would make it easier to find folks like Bud Kirkpatrick, Phil Hearn and others.

I am, of course, talking aboput the university website and not the AAUP website.
