Is there not a typo in this first sentence??? "apart" should read "a part"
The Southern Miss Department of Polymer Science is proud of your accomplishments and we're proud that you are apart of the Southern Miss alumni familly.
will my tung oil research degree, get me an invite to this affair?
shelby was throwing around tung oil, before he could spell polymer....of course we always did have a problem in grammar and spelling at george hurst hall
Well, these errors aren't earth-shattering, but don't look particularly good on a university web page. I thought, however, that all this sort of thing had to pass by the University Proofreader or somebody in PR? Those folks would have caught the errors.
oh, and Emma, I would argue that a comma is not necessary after "accomplishments." But then, commas, have always, been my weak point, along with Britishisms.

Yesterday, I might have commented on your use of commas. Today, however, I am both humbled and less concerned about trivialities. With input from Third Witch and Voter, I have prepared my Self Improvement Plan (SIP) for the week, which, unfortunately, does not include mastering the use of commas. This week, unless interrupted by Katrina, I will dedicate myself to setting trot lines, preparing whole catfish mess, and studying the myriad works of Schopenhauer.

LVN, you have a point since using "apart" rather than "a part" truly does not make the last half of that sentence a true sentence, but if the intention was for it to mean "a part" rather than "apart", then the comma needs to be there.
And I also agree that we are not being all that nit-picky since this is on a university website, (note comma) and they ought to pay attention to detail in all aspects.

It would not be wise to undertake such a study at this time, as it might render you commatose and thus unable to prepare the mess of catfish. Let's leave the Schopenhauer until after dinner.

The RSVP link provides the itinerary; SFT's "University of the Next Economy?" Please check all that apply. October 7, 2005 Meeting/Lunch Fun for the kids Student/Faculty Poster Session Dr. Thames, "University of the Next Economy" Dinner President's Home October 8, 2005 Canebrake golf outing Coast gaming/shopping/dining Activities kids/family College of Science & Technology Hospitality Corner University of Southern Miss vs. Tulsa football game
Once upon a time in past administrations new faculty were feted in the President's home . . .
Now the President's home is used for the disciplines the President favors . . . not slighting polymers . . . just to note that the Prez is padding his own nest.
I'd define corruption as taking care of your friends at the cost to the whole. This administraton continues to dole out raises to a small group of people -- in secret -- and it finds ways to swing money and support toward areas that will directly profit those who control the purse strings.
And it is usually these folks who argue against more "LIBERAL" arts education! That, aside from the obvious Freudian significance of the word in this context!

In view of the recent unfathomable disaster, it seems likely that the itinerary of this "celebration" will have to be altered. While it might be easy to be glad that Shelboo's ridiculous party has been spoiled, those among us who were at USM two years ago are deeply saddened and concerned by the news we are only now beginning to get about the aftermath of Katrina and its effects, both short- and long-term, on our friends and colleagues in southern Mississippi. All the chatter about "economic development" must now be supplanted by the much more challenging work of "economic recovery." The people of Mississippi are in our thoughts and prayers.
I agree with "former student". Tend you own garden; mind your own business; go away and don't come back. Ever. People are using this board to find out what's going on in H'burg and the coast.
You've got a serious, profound, indeed sociopathological problem with perspective. So many are praying that their family and friends are still alive. Search and rescue people are pulling the bloated dead from houses in my town, Bay St Louis. Our nation's most wonderful city is drowning. And you think of this. Words fail me.

I'm sorry, but I don't see anything objectionable in Dr. Kimber's post. He is concerned for his former place of work and residence. I know that tempers are short now, but please let's all remain calm here. We are all affected by this tragedy.

I agree with Truth. No one owns the patent on sorrow.
"polymer science" got its start after hurricane camille in 1969, prior to camille it was called tung oil, then camille took out all the tung trees.....then comes in SFT and ushers in polymer science at USM...what is next for Shelby?
