In today's Student Printz, COB Dean Harold Doty is quoted as saying, "We are unwilling to focus on what one magazine has defined as a measurement of quality."

Contrast this with Doty's goal to be ranked in the top 100 business schools in the USN&WR rankings.

What is it, Doty? Do we ignore magazine rankings, or do we use them as strategic goals?

Daydreaming about new skyboxes mostly. Reminiscing about a prior NIT championship. And a university where all of the administrators are millionaires.

Provide a little context for the quote, bitte. It could be construed either way. USM is currently at the bottom of the USN&WR ranking because we are unwilling to focus on what one magazine has defined as a measurement of quality. And it is likely to stay there, because "we" are unwilling to focus on any serious measurement of quality.

It's all about quantity anyway.

Quality is not going to make up the gap between expenditures & declining state appropriations. Only more paying customers will do that. Quantity, quantity, quantity!

They are under contract to remain at www.studentprintz.com, but that website has not been updated yet, and the date is stuck on Wednesday, August 24

The SP article quoting Doty confirms the rumored college name change.  The "College of Business and Economics" was mentioned in the article.  Someone posted here last week that a new college name was coming, and they were run off the board.

in 2002, it was the College of Business

in 2003, it was changed to the College of Business and Economic Development

in 2004, "and Economic Development" was dropped from the name

in 2005, it's been changed to the College of Business and Economics?

What is this? A new name every year?

In 2006, expect the college to disappear into the "Virtual College of Business and Economics Now Fully Developed"

I suppose it's stating the obvious to point out that these annual name changes serve to make us look like a bunch of fools to the legitimate academic community.  This reminds me of a flick I saw some years ago  (I can't recall the name but it was something one might expect from Mel Brooks or Woody Allen)  in which the dictator of an imaginary country spends all his time trying to think of impressive titles for himself, changing them as often as he changes underwear. Which in turn reminds me that Shelby Thames bears an eerie resemblance to Idi Amin Dada, stylistically that is.

2006 - College of Business and Other Stuff

2007 - College of Business and Finance

2008 - College of Business Leadership

2009 - College of Making Money

2010 - College of Riches

Regarding the name change, my guess is that the student reporter probably made an error (can't imagine why with three name changes in as many years) although I sorta think Business and Economics (as opposed to Business and Economic Development) is kinda cool.  Btw, WDAM still reports it as College of Business and Economic Development whenever they mention it.

Yes,  Dr. Thames is something to behold when decked out in full dress uniform on ceremonial occasions.  I was particularly impressed by that knee length gold lame tunic and impressive chest full of medals he sported at last years Aramark Golden Revelry.  Wonder if he's planning to reprise that look this year?
