The PR department is releasing a PR story about every 15 minutes this morning, all from David Tisdale. Two have been about program rankings, and others about accomplishments of faculty/students. Are they in USNWR defense mode?

No -- actaully I'd say the opposite. They have been recently liberated. David is really a nice guy and very gung ho about promoting faculty and students because he actually likes them . . .
One of the folks who cares about USM and still keep soldiering on . . . .
I don't know Mr. Tisdale, but if SJ says he's a nice guy, well, I trust that.
Just my but it's high time that the USM public relations department concentrated on bragging about the accomplishments of faculty & students. And if they're releasing something every 15 minutes, I say, "GOOD FOR THEM!"
Right now we need all the good PR we can get. There is a big storm brewing on the horizon, but I am not at liberty to divulge what it involves. However, it could be the next and last "stupid thing" for Thames.

Puleeze don't drop cryptic teasers like this. You're an anonymous poster and you should be bulletproof. If you know something relevant and don't wish to use your regular screen name, select another and provide more details.

However, it will be the first "stupid thing" under Commissioner Meredith. I seriously doubt that Meredith will remove SFT on the first strike. Unless of course, it is of an embarrassing nature such as a picture of SFT having sex with a kangaroo. On the other hand, such an activity would give new meaning to the phrase, "hop to it".
See Donald's recent question on a previous thread and think SACS, but then throw politics into the mix. It actually could be a perfect storm.
"If USM fully subscribed to AAUP principles this would not happen. Even a tenured faculty member terminated for cause would be given a full year's notice. "
i think this is what is referred to (although i think someone said the last name is Pickering):
"What is the status of the case against IHL and some locals that was brought by former fundraiser Frank Pinkerton? He alleged a conspiracy to get Fleming that involved him and that he was led on blindly and involved in a way that later caused him to lose his job when he crossed Thames."

As a former resident of and regular visitor to Oz, I must tell you that no self respecting kangaroo would give a second look to Shelby Thames, much less get physical. The Southern Hairy-nose Wombat of New South Wales would be more his type.

Do you think that Southern Hairy-nose Wombats have no sensibilities?
This is beginning to remind me of that old saw, "What do you get if you cross a pig with a lawyer?"

I support David T. and anything he writes because he has been here forever, longer than most professors, and he knows what is going on! He's an honest man and a valuable person to have in his current position. He has more integrity than I can find anywhere else wrapped up into one human being. He's the best!... Tisdale is always, forever, one of the "good guys". Salt of the Earth.

Yep, David is one of the good guys. He's just a man doing his J.O.B. No problem with that.

Whoever is in charge of PR department these days needs to try and determine who covers USM(and it maybe several writers) for HA and CL. Too many times when there is a good piece of news it is a "submitted story"
PR needs these rags to "write" about USM not "print" about USM.
This maybe a minor point, but in the big leagues, these submitted articles mean very little.Because in general submitted pieces are mere announcements.
I can tell you from experience that the HA and CL thrive on submitted stories when it comes to features. They don't have the staff - this is why we don't have reviews of productions or performances, among other things. Most of their reporters are assigned to cover the basic major events except for the occasional major feature . . .
This isn't out of line with where mid-size papers in many cities (particularly those owned by Gannett) have gone these days. Sad -- but news staffs are pretty much cut to the bone these days and if you want to get t published the best way is to write it yourself.

Easy. Nothing. Some things a pig just won't do. Same goes for southern hairy-nose wombats, no doubt.
Yes, I am very much aware of the submitted articles...........and the
The trick is to have articles actually written....
Granted the increase in Petal garbage collection fees are more important than the installing new street signs on USM campus, but if PR can convince newspapers to write an article about new signs in conjunction with the recent news of new parking fees possibly you may have some good PR.
Some PR departments seem to have the knack of creating good news(not submitted articles).

Well, yes. I understand that you are saying the PR office needs to develop a relationship with the CL and HA that is more "influencing." That would take a permanent PR person who actually likes the media and understands that getting the good word out is probably cultivated a lot better through occasional breakfasts or drinks with the publisher or some key writers than it is calling them up at the point a story is needed or wanted. We have some good people on the stff (David is one I think) who are quite capable of that -- it takes a willingness and a liking of socializing as much as anything, I guess.
We should be hearing soon who the new head of PR is going to be . . .
