3 Babins?
Permalink Closed

Yesterday's HA article about the strip mall boom contained quotes from USM marketing professor Ben Babin.  A friend of mine who lives near Barry and Laurie Babin said that Ben is Barry's cousin, and he began at USM recently.

I know Barry and Laurie have lived here some time.  Isn't Barry now a department head over there?

Barry Babin is the chair of Management and Marketing in the COB. His wife, Laurie, is his direct subordinate...at least in the official COB organizational chart. This arrangement has raised many eyebrows in the COB, since there was no announcement of how the evaluation process, etc., would be handled in that instance.

Jerry Babin is on his way.

I hope this thread doesn't turn into a "nepotism in hiring" stream.  Ben and I served on a committee together and he is a quality hire for USM.  He should've been hired here, relative of Barry or not.

Ben is an exciting hire, the best in years for this department and school.  He comes well published in the Journal of Strip Mall Sciences, the premier journal for this area.  He will help Hattiesburg have one the highest strip mall ratios per capita in the nation.  We welcome economic development such as this.

After making a call to a friend in the CoB, I was directed to a recent Hattiesburg American article. I am in the process of finding it and posting it, but if someone else can find it, then more power to you.

It looks like Ben Babin is a real person and not the "joke" persona that some of the responses here have indicated.

Is there really such a publication as "Strip Mall Sciences"?

Are you sure that's not "Strip CLUB Sciences?" It's going to be required reading for our graduate students in the College of Casino & Brothel Management. We're still working on getting subscriptions ot Hustler approved by the IRS as a tax deductible professional journal...

There is a separate journal for Strip Club Sciences...I hear it is a "hot" journal.  However, one of the requirements is that each paper submission must be accompanied by a one dollar bill.

Does it come in a plain brown wrapper?

Or maybe you can get it online . . . .

I'm confused by the discussion concerning terminal degree research requirements and nomenclature. Will USM be conferring a Doctor of Casino and Brothel Management degree, or a Ph.D. in Casino and Brothel Management? If it's the latter, what sort of brothel research will be required?

Despite the protestations from the Dome, we are hoping to offer the Doctorate in Adult Management Numerology. That's because it isn't a research degree but rather is based on "hands-on" work. It will also allow members of the community to refer to our graduates as "DAMN USM alumni." (Of course, Ole Mythologists have been calling them that for years...)

Ben's wife is active in the community and church.  Their kids (3) are new students at PCS.  Glad to see he's doing well at Southern.

Will BOGUS be offering a similar program, and at lower cost to the matriculants?  I think the characterization as "holding a DAMN BOGUS degree" has more cachet than does "DAMN USM alumni."  Plus, this might be a course of study best undertaken in the privacy of one's own home.

I took Ben Babin for a class this Spring, and he's okay.  I've now had all 3 Babins in my career at USM.  They are all pretty good.

With the burgeoning market in religiosity these days, I assume they will be offering courses in brothely love?

Voter are you sure you are not confused with the new joint degree program between COAL and CoB -- the executive masters progam in the adult entertainment industry.

According to the CoB website, the CoB's mission statement is "Developing Careers." Perhaps the new EMAE (Executive Masters in Adult Entertainment) will fill the bill for some of Mississippi's more physically attractive yet academically challenged female population.

Of course, there's already competition:

Whore College

From USM's 2006 SACS report:

"The initiation of the Executive Masters in Adult Entertainment program (EMAE) promises to meet a real need in or constituent area. We are proud to be competing with nationally recognized programs such as Whore College to educate the budding Adult Entertainment and Sex Workers of Mississippi."

From SFT's 2007 Commencement address:

"USM is a Carnegie Doctoral Intensive Research University and a Southern Regional Education Board Class 1 University. In addition, we are proud to have the number one Economic Development program and the number two Adult Entertainment Education program in the world."

Wasn't there a time many years ago when USM called itself "The Career University?" I thought that image presentation was a poor choice then and I think it's a poor choice now.

Disc Q,  I'm holding you personally responsible for the ruination of my new keyboard. It didn't survive the explosive discharge of dark roast coffee triggered by your post. By the way, who does SFT credit with having the number one Adult Entertainment Education program?

That's pretty much the extent of it. But I thought everybody already knew that!

At the time, I thought it was more a reference to guys like Fred Horne who made a career out of going to college...

Yeah, it was kind of dumb. But I liked the trimester system...

Just an artsy supporter type myself. Of course, what is art?
Someone PLEASE tell me this is a spoof.

In a day or two (another poster gave us the exact date) we the USNews rankings will be out. Then we'll know how our traditional programs are viewed. The only sure prediction is that USM will be listed in the very same issue as Harvard.

Actually, for a brief period, USM was on the trimester system. I think it tried that around 1972-73. Basically, the calendar "looked" like the quarter system that USM had used before then, but the class meetings were 10 minutes or so longer & they awarded semester hour credit. It was great -- at least by the definition of a 19 year old who wanted to get a BS before he turned 21. If one went a couple of summers, it was possible to get a degree in 3 years. Of course, it was a lot like the Bataan Death March at times, but I pulled it off.
