Deans seem to be making visits to faculty members getting terminal contracts.  That may be what the dome decided to do after days of discussions.  Doesn't it make sense to simply tell everyone what has been decided?  It is like not knowing what is wrong with you.

I'm hearing via staff friends that unit meetings were held today and people are being told privately before the public announcement. It seems like the most humane thing to do. I imagine most people appreciate having a little time to deal with such devastating news in private.

"humane thing to do" HA Dream On

Martha is just Shelby in a skirt.
Mark my words her list won't match that of UPC.

Why can't USM just to things the right way for a change.

The only thing I was referring to was the issue of telling people they're losing their jobs privately, rather than issuing a public announcement as the previous poster seems to think should be done. Losing your job is hard enough without finding out in a press release.

sorry LVN, it wasn't meant toward you, but the taught that the executive committee is being human.

They have axes to grind which is probably why it took them over a week to make a move. Let's face it, if they were going to use UPC recommendation then it would of been out a week ago. I'm sure it didn't match their list, so they needed a week to maneuver around it.

What remains to be seen is the fate of tenured faculty at State, Ole Miss, Delta State, and Jackson State. So far it looks like USM isn't looking out for faculty relative to the other schools. Time will tell.

Why are so many tenured and tenure-track faculty terminated and so many instructors remain?  Is it strictly dollars now with few thoughts for long-run goals?

The object of the exercise is to downsize the university in terms of programs for long term viability. The faculty losses are collateral damage. If a program is cut, the faculty in it are cut without regard to rank or tenure status.

Today's Clarion-Ledger makes it clear that USM is the only school letting people go. The terminations represent about 5% of the faculty, a number which could have probably been reached with normal attrition. If the university had wanted to respect tenure, it would not have been difficult. If Delta State and Jackson State can manage their budget cuts without terminating tenure track faculty, USM could as well.

Does anyone have a complete list of the faculty cut?

If you want to know if there is fear and anxiety out there, check the large number of thread views and how few commenters there are. Times are tough. Ramsey's cartoon in today's C-L is on the mark.

I've noticed that too, Incredulous, even as a brand-new person to this message board. When people are this nervous, this fearful, it says a lot about upper administration and about the appearances being created - appearances, like perceptions, being "everything," y'know .....

What a shame for our university, and how very, very sad.

Is there any truth to the rumor that USM didn't get its share of Katrina money---that Barbour diverted it to the coast?

A more expensive WCU is up, and USM is down in enrollment?

Does anyone else believe WCU is gaining from USM's cuts in faculty?
