Re:    Dependent Child Scholarship

Effective with the fall 2005 semester, there is no longer a grade point
average requirement associated with the dependent child scholarship as
long as the dependent remains in good standing with the University.
Previously, a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 was required
to retain the tuition benefit.

This policy for regular benefit-eligible employees applies to dependent
children  (an unmarried natural child, adopted child, step-child, or legal
ward) who are enrolled at Southern Miss, have not received a bachelor's
degree from Southern Miss or any other institution, are unmarried, and are
less than age 25.  A dependent child does not qualify if the dependent has
declared that he/she is  independent for the purpose of securing federal
financial aid.

For a currently enrolled dependent child who is eligible for this benefit,
due to the policy change and for employees making initial application for
this  scholarship, please contact the Department of Human Resources.

If you should have any questions, please call 6-4050.

Thank you.

Is this new board policy? I always thought the dependent tuition break was controlled by the IHL. If not, is it an attempt to be a "good guy" who cares--a gesture after the parking fee increase?

Why is the 2.5 GPA requirement being dropped? Could it be that somebody way up in the hierarchy threw a fit about it because a dependent didn't qualify?

My child went through USM with the 50% tuition break and had to hold a 2.5.  She lost it for 2 semesters with a 2.3.  My question has always been why should faculty/staff children be held to a higher GPA than the general population.  I have worked hard at USM and this is FINALLY a benefit to underpaid staffers.

both MSU and UM made a similar change in their dependent tuition policies.

I agree with you 100%. I doubt that the the 2.5 GPA requirement elimination was not done out of the goodness of their hearts. There has to be a reason.

All seriousness aside, I note "legal ward" is part of the definition of dependent.

Seeing's how USM employees (faculty & staff) are underpaid relative to the southeastern average & all that, perhaps a USM faculty adoption service could be set up, whereby faculty members legally adopt students for, say, 25% of tuition. This still gives the student a 25% discount. Let's just figure that 25% fee at $600/semester. Adopt a large "foster family" & well, you can do the math...

This sort of "entrepreneurship" should be right in line with Shelby's plan to make faculty millionaires.
