Southern Miss AD gets $40,000 boost in deal through 2009
..."I wasn't anticipating that," said Giannini,, whose pay went from $221,944 a year to $261,944. "I had asked for an extension, but I'm pleased and thankful that (USM President) Dr. (Shelby) Thames, and the state (College) Board would do that."
Thames could not be reached for comment, but College Board Vice President D. E. Magee of Jackson said he did not recall any major discussion on the recommendations Thames and USM submitted in July.
"When it comes to issues of personnel, a president makes a request, and 99 percent of the time, the board will support the president," Magee said....
Not bad--almost a 20% raise. Even though I can hardly keep my family afloat, Even though his raise is about equal to my entire salary as an asst. prof. I'm honored to work at an institution with a person so clearly superior to me.
But I'm sure his pay is out of the athletic budget, no money coming from the General Fund
Budgets are only a matter of initial allocation. I've heard chairs and deans chime forth with b.s. such as "It's not in our budget." All that means is "it is there but it has been put in another pot and I don't want you to tap that pot although I have the authority to shift the funds from pot to pot."
$40,000 gross increase will be an approximate $26,000 net increase. Gianinni could use the $26K to fund the $26 parking permit increase for 1,000 employees.
Congratulations to Ricky Giannini. What a dud. The Peter Principle holds, once again. But then you gotta know how to pucker up, and he definitely does!
"Bower and Almond confirmed Tuesday that the Golden Eagles' starting quarterback had been arrested and pleaded guilty to a DUI charge on July 24, 2002, in Hattiesburg.
No disciplinary action was announced with regard to Almond's arrest, although both Bower and Almond said a punishment had been levied at the time. But the punishment was not a game suspension, because Almond participated in the 2002 season opener against Jackson State as a backup quarterback to starter Micky D'Angelo.
Last season, Southern Miss linebacker Naton Stewart was suspended for one game by Bower following his arrest on a DUI charge in September."
Seems to me we could save a little more money to put toward Giannini's salary if we just hire our own parole officer to work our athletic department.
My solution to athletes commiting those infactions is to treat them similar to the way that Martha S. was confined: Restrict their movements to the football field during practice sessions and during game time. An alarm buzzer would go off if they so much as entered the library or a classroom.

Are we now learning the Bower's program may be like many of the rest, only he doesn't reveal things as much b/c he's not in a major media market? Sounds like it.
