Went to check on my coastal property and managed a couple of days in the Burg. Must say - I liked the Plaza idea - it will work, however, they must take those nasty "Freeing the Power of the Individual" banners down since it seems a bit ironic. Ill placed and ill thought out - nice to reconfirm that Bower is one fine individual - this year's recruiting class is impressive due to Jeff Bower, not the Golden Eagle (since the ill thought out Shelby Thames) tradition. The one recruited with Gianniny's and Thames's name all over him has really never been addressed by Jeff. Bower is a first class individual, as many of the remaining faculty continue to be. We sell no one short.

Well, that's my minor report. Loved to take in Hattiesburg for a brief couple of days. I miss everyone there. However, I'm happy to report to "duty" in August where I now work. Give me a good IHL Commish and a good PREZ and a new Dean and Chair, and I'd come home in a second.

Dear Miss Emma,

Would you be interested in joining our excellent faculty at the new USM branch in D'Lo?  We have full time positions available in several colleges.  I'd be honored to give you a personal tour of our campus, and introduce you around. We're not a big  city like Hattiesburg, but folks here are real friendly, and the cost of living is very low. We're aiming to have 10,000 students by 2010, not to mention our own football team, the USM Highway 49ers. Let me know if you're interested.  I can send one of the USM jets to pick you up, and of course you'd be welcome to stay in our guest house while you're in town. I hope you come see us real soon.

Sincerely yours,

W.J. Johnson, Professor of Economic Development and Chancellor, USM at D'Lo

Why Professor Johnson, I'd be honored to be considered for a job on the D'Lo campus. Not only is D'Lo known for its cheaper gas prices but I'd love to be associated with the Hwy 49'ers!!!

Could it be that another one of those Internet meetings we're cautioned about is unfolding right before our very eyes.

Remove thy mind from the gutter forthwith. Professor Johnson and Miss Emma are individuals of impeccable character and have only a professional interest in arranging a D'Lo rendezvous.

Perhaps it is appropriate to recall one of W.J. Johnson's campaign slogans--"I'm not Shelby!"

That says it all.

Emma, bearing in mind that the Administration Building at D'lo is a double-wide, you might want a gracious way to decline that guest house offer. It may not actually include plumbing. I think an Econo-Lodge would be a better choice. No offense to WJ, of course. We know he does the best he can.

My relationship with Professor W. J. is truly on a professional level. Those of you familiar with the principles that  USM was supposed to be built upon will understand our grounding.  Those that do not, oh I do so love to be talked about -  W.J. could be a worse companion if I am the target of gossipmongers.  Loved my trip btw. Southern MS is so green and robust compared to where I currently live and teach.

Emma,

After you do confer with Professor Johnson, I will be contacting you to arrange an interview.  You may not have heard that I am preparing the official three-volume biography ("Childhood: A Brilliant Dawn"; "Youth: The Sun Rises"; "Maturity: The Glory Years"); I will welcome your insights and perspective.  At some point, of course, there will be a fourth volume ("Ascent and Apotheosis"), but everyone who admires this great man hopes that the work on volume four will be postponed for as long as possible.
