the game is on.....
will it be political again?
the word in 2002 was that if AKL went along with the SFT appointment and did not make waves that his daughter would follow SFT. Can a masterplan be decided that much in advance?

other new names on the street (Hardy)
Tom Burnham
William Lewis
Clyda Rent
Don Cotten

I heard that story too, but I can't imagine that Dr. Lucas would sacrifice everything he achieved for USM like that. We've actually discussed this before and others felt the same way. In fact, I don't understand why his daughter would want to come here. Millsaps is a good place, and if she wants to move to a bigger institution, she would probably have better choices.
As for Rent, that seems unlikely.

i would agree that Rent is out.
the other three have solid connections.

Let's have an open, honest, national search. Is that concept too novel around here?

I don't think they would take away his retirement or the building name.

wake up folks.....the game is on.

lay back like you did in 2002 and you may have a Burnham or Lewis or a _________.

you really need to get active....i don't see much of it on this board....just because i am on the coast does not mean that i am not for the total institution.

it is political......you can bet on it....

If we have learned anything from the last years, it should be that each of us has both the right and the responsibility to be aware of activities related to governance of the institution, and to be active in these affairs.  The old days of trusting and hoping for the best are gone.

Burnham is dean of the college of education at Ole Miss, former state superintendent of education. Lewis is president of PRCC.

Does Lewis have any experience as an administrator at a comprehensive university?

This is a fine suggestion. Suitable experience and diplomacy are important, and diplomacy is my middle name.  I plan to throw my hat in the ring as soon as Dr. Thames decides to step down.  As you know, I've been a successful businessman, lobbyist, professor of economic development, and chancellor of the rapidly expanding USM branch campus in D'Lo. And most important, I get along with most everybody, regardless of their political persuasion or taste in music. I'm partial to Perry Como and Old Blue Eyes, but young Mr. Dylan is OK with me too, 'cause the times they are a changin'.  When the time comes, I hope I'll have your support with the IHL.  Did I mention that I love fried Mississippi catfish?

Professor Johnson,

Your wisdom has been much missed on this board.  It heartens me greatly that you are planning to announce your candidacy for the presidency of USM; my only regret was that Meredith beat you out for the IHL board.  Is there anywhere where we can send contributions to your campaign or volunteer for service?

Thank you for your kind words.  Now that I've thought about it, I believe it's good that Dr. Meredith beat me to the punch for that IHL commissioner's job.  From what I've heard he's stepping into a mess and he'll probably need to crack a few heads right off.  I'm not sure I'd be up to that.  My management style is more friendly and easy going.  One of our liberal arts professors described it as a lazy fare approach. It's been pretty darn effective in my efforts to build up our D'Lo campus, and I think it'll be perfect in Hattiesburg.  I'm generally inclined to stay out of the way and just let folks do their jobs, with an occasional come-to-Jesus meeting whenever I think it's necessary. If you hire good enough people, it's hardly ever necessary.

I do appreciate your offer of assistance.  We'll be running a frugal, low key  campaign so I won't be asking anyone for money, but  I might just take you up on the volunteer service angle.  Let me talk to the little woman, who's serving as my campaign manager, and get back to you.  In the mean time, I could probably use a little help coming up with a campaign slogan.

Your friend,

W.J. Johnson, Professor of Economic Development and Chancellor, USM at D'Lo

Actually, I don't care if you like my slogan.  I simply wanted to demonstrate the correct use of "an" after yesterday's lengthy discussion.

Maybe I missed it in your first post, but where did you demonstrate the correct use of "an?"  I didn't see an "an."  I did see an "and," and I commend you on using it properly.

Yes, I see the screen name. The post implies that the correct use of "an" is demonstrated within the slogan.

In line with the new MS Dept of Economic Development's campaign, i.e. "Mississippi! Hey, at least it's not Arkansas!" I am considering whether W.J. might use something like:

W.J. Johnson! At least it's not Shelby!

That's odd, because we Arkansans are always saying, "Hey, at least we're not Mississippi"
