Actor James Doohan, best known as Scotty, the feisty, Scottish-accented chief engineer on television's original "Star Trek" series has died. Reuter's News
Can't possibly count the number of times over the past months, beginning in the spring of 2004, that I've said "Beam me up, Scottie, and get me out of this Sci Fi circus that SFT is producing."
If I remember correctly, didn't James Doohan speak at USM on one or more occasions? I seem to remember something about him speaking to the Honors Forum, or something like that, in the 1980's.
Also, if I remember correctly, some of the other cast members also spoke to the Honors Forum. I clearly remember Leonard Nimoy (Spock) speaking in that venue.
NOOO! Not Scotty!! (Although he was probably about a hundred years old.) As a long time Trekker (not to be confused with "trekkie") I'll be having a moment of silence here at the house, followed by a unison "I don't know how much more she can take, Captain!"

Dunno about the Honors Forum, but Doohan did speak (and show film outtakes) in Bennett Auditorium in the mid-70s.
"Scotty" was an officer in the Canadian Artillery Corps during WWII, participated in the D-Day invasion, was decorated for valor and was seriously wounded in combat, losing one of his fingers and sustaining other injuries as well. He lived a long rich life, but his passing is a sad occasion as he now joins others of the greatest generation.

Military Historian,
You are quite correct. Doohan also did a stint as a pilot, according to some of the bios I have read in the past 2 days, but I am not sure if he was a combat pilot or not.
"Scotty" successfully hid the fact of his missing finger quite well throughout his Star Trek career, allowing it to be seen only 3-4 times on camera throughout all of the TV episodes as well as the 7 ST movies he appeared in.
