Leaving Hattiesburg, but not this board
Permalink Closed

To my fellow posters, many of whom have become dear friends:

Sometime Monday I will have to take down this computer and prepare it for my move to Austin late next week. I wanted to take just a minute to say a heartfelt "Thank you" to the posters on this board who have kept up a (mostly) clean-cut and (always) lively debate regarding the issues surrounding our beloved university. I would like to think that I have contributed one or two worthy comments in this running stream of conversation. But, I know that I have learned far more than I have contributed both on this board and in the processes with which I have been involved over the past year.

Leaving Hattiesburg, though it has been in the planning for months, is now upon me. I will leave early next Thursday, having given the dog a tranquilizer to make his ride more comfortable, to move 600 miles away and begin a new chapter. I've been here just 23 months, but it has become a home to me and I am saddened greatly to leave the university, the city and so many wonderful friends and colleagues behind. I'm not leaving because I "don't love it." I'm leaving in spite of that fact. I suspect that many of our quality faculty who have left could say the same, and I have heard them say so.

I won't be leaving this board. You may not hear from me for a bit as I settle in, but I will be checking in and staying abreast of the ongoing saga. UT-Austin, my new academic home, is a terrific university. Does it have its share of problems? Of course. Universities are flawed organizations made up of flawed individuals. And, in the case of universities (unlike some organizations), these individuals are largely the brightest and best of society -- the thinkers. This makes them particularly vulnerable to controversy. As is often the case, our greatest strength can become our greatest weaknesses. It's mostly a strength here.

USM has MORE than its share of problems, and I do not think it is wrong at all to lay the vast majority of those at the feet of its leadership team -- by which I mean (using 'leadership' loosely), Shelby Thames and his loyal administrative supporters. Will it survive this debacle? I am encouraged to believe it will survive, but only because conscientious people of integrity, character and perseverance will make it so. I refer, of course, to the faculty and staff who dedicate themselves daily to what must often seem a "lost cause."

A special word of thanks to the local chapter of AAUP and its leadership. Folks like Amy Young, Mike Forster and others who encouraged my involvement and even my graduate student membership in the organization, are amony my many heroes here. I would be remiss, also, in not mentioning publicly my great admiration for Myron Henry, Ray Folse, Anne Wallace (too soon gone from us), Stephen Judd, Jameela Lares and quite a few who would prefer I not mention them by name but who certainly know who they are and how I feel about them. Finally, my dear faculty in the School of Social Work, every one of whom is dedicated to providing a quality education -- one which I received gratefully, all know of my undying respect, regard and affection for them.

So, I depart soon for another place and another school. But I will be back in Hattiesburg, maybe even for the coming out party. It remains my fervent hope and full belief that this will be before June of 2007.

My best each of you!
DJ

Good by, David. Thanks for the kind words.  I hope you will so fall in love with UT-Austin that your time at USM will just seem like an old nightmare.  I will look for your post on this board.

Did you hear that Bobby Middlebrooks is back on the PUC as a Faculty Senate Rep?  I’m sure he will miss you there.

Dearest Mr. Johnson,

I am so sad that your departure comes before Mlle. de Guerre returns from Europe. Of course, you have been one of the Honorary Gentleman Callers from the beginning of things, but I know she will be sad not to pour you a farewell glass of champagne and perhaps pack a small hamper to help you on your way. (Mlle believes strongly in the power of chocolate as an aid to travel, although local friends have convinced her that a fried chicken leg and a couple of devilled eggs are helpful as well. )

Take great care on your journey, and we expect to hear great things from you in the future, and of course there will be a welcome waiting for you on The Great Day, whenever that comes.

As Mlle. would say, bon voyage et bon chance

Your friend,
H.A.

David,

Best wishes for a wonderful time at UT!  Thanks for your committed service to USM, especially during your tenure on the PUC.  Your posts have always been among my favorites on this board, and I look forward to reading many more of them.  Take care.

I join Ray Folse in thanking you for your kind words, David.  Thanks also for taking the time to write a substantial note.

Thursday will mean travel for me as well, as I return from England on that day.  BTW, I can assure Miss Angleterre that I never did catch sight of Monique de Guerre over here.  But I will join MdG and HA in wishing you bonne chance.  I'm glad you plan to stay in touch.

Jameela

Thanks, Ray. But, this has been far from a nightmare for me. (I'm discounting the Shelby-related experiences...too many good things outweigh his shenanigans.)

Yes, i heard that Bobby is back on the PUC. Haven't had a chance to send him a sympathy note. I think Bobby was as pleased to rotate off that December as I was, and the senate undoubtedly found him to be such a capable rep that they have elected him back to it (he was formerly appointed as was I). I guess it proves that "No good deed goes unpunished."

Thanks to Texas EX and USM Sympathizer. Fear not...I'll be lurking around for some time to come!

As for Ms. Angleterre, I hope you will convey to Mlle. de Guerre my profound admiration for her and my fervent wish that she return to the burg sooner rather than later. I shall miss our occasional tetes-a-tete and sharing champagne with the charming lady, as I have missed her since she has been touring abroad. I heartily agree concerning the value of chocolate for ameliorating the otherwise deleterious effects of extended travel and shall be sure to lay in a store for the long journey westward. Should you or Mlle. find yourselves in the near vicinity of Austin, I shall be most disturbed if you do not permit me to return the gracious hospitatlity which I have often enjoyed at her table.

And, finally, dear Jameela, I am chagrined that our travel plans are such that I shall barely miss your return. I will look forward to seeing you again, however, on one of my return trips to the burg. I remain under consulting contract to a local agency here which shall perhaps require my return visit on occasion. I thank you, Ms. Angleterre and Mlle. de Guerre for the wishes of bonne chance and return them with equal fervor.

David,

Is there any chance that you can talk Shelby into going with you to Austin?  SURELY the University of Texas would love to have a wurl class polymer science program.  It might finally put UT on the map.  That way UT would also have bragging rights over TAMU, which merely managed to hire a Donne scholar.

Beelzebubba!

Bite your tongue!!! Take him WITH me?!? Are you in serious need of counseling, or do you think I am? HAHAHAHAA~

Besides, Austin is hot, but I think Shelby deserves even hotter. Wouldn't want him retiring to a climate where he'd be too cold in his old age. Anybody got any better suggestions?

DJ

p.s. I love your s/n Beelzebubba. And, for suggesting that I take him to Austin with me, you are more the devil than a henchman.

David, come to Commerce Street for the Texas-Oklahoma football game in Dallas, and I'll buy you a beer.  If not, the coming out party will be the first time we meet.

David, I'm posting this Tuesday so you may not see it . . . but I send my best wishes in thought as well as in these words. Thank you for all you've done (and for your kind words).

I did my doctoral work in Austin, and I think you'll love it. I'm afraid my tips for living there are now something like 20 years old, but in my day the keys were local music, local food, Half-Price Books (used to be on Guadaloupe, aka "The Drag," just up from the U.), and the coop grocery that Whole Foods hadn't bought out (probably gone now!). Oh, yes, and stay the hell off of I-35! (You can't, but you can hope.)

Do take care--
Anne Walllace
