It must irritate SFT to no end to have Crofts yanking his chain.

And an irritated SFT is a reckless SFT . . .

Giannini has been trying to leave.  He was a candidate at Central Florida, although not as serious a candidate as he would like for you to believe.  Easy to see why he does Shelboo's bidding.  Nice salary.  Also nice bonus the Mixon boys got for him to run the Bidness men's athletic booster club.

What if we offered to send Giannini to Central Florida and threw in Pood and Lassen to sweeten the pot?  Maybe Ken Malone too since he's originally a Floridian.  And give 'em a case of Aramark hot dogs to seal the deal.

The best part of the trade would be....they don't have to give us anything in return. Whadda ya think?

I have been pondering this situation and here's what I've got:

1. Gianinni has actually pulled off some athletic coups (home-and-home series with Cal and Nebraska, etc.) and has been fairly successful at the sports that the average USM fan cares about (football, basketball, and baseball). As such, he may be the cause of energizing the "alumni base" via sports.

2. As such, the puppetmasters from the "conspiracy theory" see Gianinni as a threat. They have the IHL (through Crofts) hold up the contract in a move to aggravate Gianinni and, hoopefully, run him off. The IHL then makes it "known" (via back channels) that it will not approve any more big $$ athletics-related contracts for USM.

3. Within 3 years, USM athletics sinks to a much lower level and fan support begins to die off, as the "Battle for the Bell" becomes the highlight of the football season, LE is unable to recruit under the watchful eye of a low-paid bulldog AD, and no further capital improvements are allowed for baseball.

4. As fan support wanes, so does alumni activity with respect to USM.

5. The "puppetmasters" now have their best opening in the post-Shelby chaos to drive USM down altogether, given a weakened academic position (think of all the academic losses and their full effect with no replacements) and the designed loss of alumni/booster support. This is supported by the recent discussions of reducing the number of universities in MS made by Klumb and others in public forums.

Fwiw, I don't think this has anything to do with Richard.  I think it has to do with Shelby not being allowed to make long-term decisions that the next president may not want to inherit.  Think that's why we're stuck without a real provost in the interim as well.

If you are right, HP, how is it that he can make academic administrative-level appointments such as chairs? Wouldn't that mean that academic appointments are viewed of lesser concern than athletic appointments to the next president?

AD and Provost are direct reports to the president, aren't they?

I hadn't thougt of it that way. That would be another reason that is not good for an institution, whose human resources has been scattered to kingdom come, should not have a lame duck leader for two years.

Angie Dvorak definitely reported to the president when she was here in the dome sitting on Shelboo's lap. I'm not so sure about now, but she probably still reports to him.  That is who you were referring to as AD, isn't it?

I think that Holding pattern was referring to the Athletic Director as "AD."

Isn't this thread about Richard Giannini, the AD, or Athletic Director?

CAL and Nebraska were done before Giannini arrived.  He may take the credit for it, but then that's a standard operating procedure in the Shelboo regime!  Like Shelby taking credit for the student union, the Lott building and program, and countless other things.  It was also the Fleming administration that planned the power plant restaurant.  Another item Shelboo claims.  But, then, he claims everything except the gigantic screw-ups he genuinely IS responsible for!

I am mindful that the subject of this thread is the Athletic Director. The comment concerning Mrs. Dr. Dr. Dvorak was sarcastic.  I apologize if I muddied the waters of this discussion.  Given the ongoing confusion concerning the tongue-in-cheek news stories posted earlier, I should have known better and kept my mouth shut. AD did report to the prez though.

They were on the schedule by at least 1996, if not before.

I realized that your post was done tongue-in-cheek just as soon as I posted my answer. Sorry, I wasn't thinking clearly.

USM will be awesome when it's Division II athletically! It'll be the only D-II school with skyboxes. But can we really call them skyboxes? Don't they have to be over 30 feet high to qualify as skyboxes?

not unusual for ad to have contract sidelined.....remember ross and klumb took a long look at msu ad last year!!

forget about holding anyone accountable for stupid legal expenses, but certainly when the athletic directors contract comes up for renewal, give it top priority

(giannini also wanted folks at usm to think he was a real candidate for ad at auburn. sec schools wouldnt use richard's resume to prop up a crooked table)

Yes, THERE is a reason.

Fleming hired Giannini. Giannini ego and activities were held in check during Fleming and Lucas II. It was only after Thames took office that Giannini began running roughshod over USM. Anyone who is constantly in the job market (whether he or she has real or fictional opportunities) is doing one thing: constantly angling for a monetary raise. The "Giannini to Auburn" rumor was cooked up by one person: RG. He wanted some big bucks, and he apparently got them. However, he has failed (miserably) to deliver.
