Does everyone realize that we are talking about 3 mission statements here?
There is the mission statement that the IHL developed for USM and was apparently in effect until it was replaced on Thursday at the board meeting. Apparently very few run of the mill faculty and staff knew what that was.
There is SFTs "5 strategic goals" mission that headlined the SACS work that we all starting on last fall, and that the Faculty Senate rejected at its December meeting.
Then there is the mission that the faculty-led committee worked on this spring and which was approved by IHL on Thursday so that SACS work would not be delayed.
No wonder we are on probation. No wonder things are in such a mess around here. WE don't know who we are and IHL doesn't seem to know who we are. And if there is some "conspiracy" to ensure that we stay in our place--a 4th tier regional university that won't threaten the big 2 in the northern part of the state--then somebody needs to tell us that. Otherwise, our problems aren't going away any time soon.
