I thought I heard on the news this morning that IHL approved Larry Eustachy's employment contract, totalling somewhere around half a million dollars a year. Did anybody else hear this? Are our priorities screwed up or what? We have a hiring freeze on right now for everybody except athletic personnel. We are losing what few candidates we have because we're not getting permission to hire and that's leaving us with the dregs in our candidate pools (if we even have candidate pools). But we've got a half-a-mil basketball coach.
this was in the news yesterday. it's .5 million if he meets all of his incentive clauses, one of which includes graduation rates. also, worked an entire year without a contract! don't know i would do that!

The graduation rate incentive is just about as stupid as giving department chairs an outrageous salary if a certain percentage of entering Freshmen graduate four years later. The responsibility for graduating should be placed on the students and not on the coach. What utter nonsense. And don't tell me that we do it because "everybody else does it." That makes no sense either.
The graduation rate incentive is just another way to contribute to grade inflation. If faculty members were given the same incentive I'll bet grade distributions would skyrocket.
I doubt it's all or nothing. Probably a base salary with additional payments if certain criteria are met. Maybe the USM president's contract should provide for a base salary with bonuses tied to improvements in academic rankings.
I think the point was that we're not holding off on getting these types of deals done but we can't hire a soul to work in the academic side. I really don't think anyone expects Eustachy to work without a contract.

Do they offer shoe contracts for walking all over a university?
