I'm of the opinion that USM's "place" in Mississippi Higher Education should be determined by the IHL, which is the managing body for higher ed in the state. That means if the IHL wants to have USM as a regional school, then it should be a regional school. I just don't understand why USM just can't be a really good regional school rather than a half-assed comprehensive school.

Mississippi University of Science and Technology (MUST)?
Mississippi University for Polymer Science (MUPS)?
Whether you liked Horace Fleming or not (and I believe that history will show that Fleming was the right person for the job), he did have a vision for USM: The University for the Gulf South.

USM finally got an experienced administator who knew what a university is all about and he gets trashed.
Horace Fleming is a good man. I had the pleasure of hearing him address the crowd at my wife's commencement (Pharm.D. @ Mercer - Atlanta) a few weeks ago. I wish that he was never shown the door at my alma mater in Hattiesburg.
