Here's a tip of the hat from the local military community to all the college faculty who work tirelessly teaching, doing research and a host of other never ending tasks. We couldn't do it without you. Thank you for your support.

in the past there has been a number of military-related classes on campus for the US armed services during summers - I assume this post is referring to that, but I don't know for sure. We certainly respect our brothers and sisters in the armed forces, though! You are very special, thank you!

If it was a jab, it wasn't very good and if it was a compliment, it wasn't very clear. I think it was meant in an ugly way, as an insult to professors. Of course the person doesn't understand that many professors are veterans. In fact, any of you posters who are vets or know who's a vet, speak up.

My dad was a vet who went to college on the GI bill after WWII and was the first in his family to go to college. Later he became a professor at a Tier 1 school. He was always very sensitive to his students who were veterans, too, and became rather close to some of them.

I don't know about y'all, but I'm getting tired of the "us and them" mentality, which mostly seems to come from the trolls these days.

LVN,

What percentage of professors do you think are veterans?  This is a serious question.  I wouldn't have any idea and would be interested in your opinion.

Also isn't/wasn't Raylawni Branch an officer in the military? Also, Dr. Denise Brown in NFS is a retired military officer. Ok, I've come up with three. Let's hear some more.

My recently-retired colleague, David Patrick, was a full colonel in the Army Corps of Engineers -- quite an accomplishment for a reservist!

Dr. Crockett is a veteran.

Keep up your chins - I know it's hard.  Why not put up a "countdown" clock at the top of your message board.  I'm sure you can think of an appropriate date to be counting towards.

Why don't we take the original post at face value & assume it was a compliment? USM has a long history of providing special summer courses for military personnel. When I was a student back in the daze of steam-driven computers & the military draft, there were Judge Adjuntant General classes on campus every summer. They stayed in Elam Arms, IIRC.

In Nursing, Sarah Powell is gone right now on active duty..., Jenny Lutz-Graves is a retired nurse officer, now a nursing professor. Janie Harris, who is now retired, was an officer. Raylawni Branch, a retired Lt Col.   Several other nurses have served, but these made careers of it.

We have several students who have graduated in Iraq and in the service.

I, for one take the nod to professors as a seriously great gesture. In return, I would like to thank all of our service people for their committment to our freedom.

Ok, Invictus and Athena have convinced me. Apologies to the OP. But it was great to find out we have so many veterans in the faculty ranks. I hope people keep posting the names.

Yes, he is. Scarborough rode with T. Roosevelt up San Juan Hill. I think he retired from the Army just after WWI.

Scarborough is in fact a navy veteran.  Ray Scurfield in social work is a veteran.

USM has produced some top notch officers and enlisted personell to include admirals, major generals and even an astronaut or two...Former Dean of COST, Steve Doblin, retired as a colonel in the Army Reserve and actually taught some of the military courses during summer sessions that Invictus referred to
