Just letting you guys know, that former USM Administrator Powell Ogletree passed away today, somewhat unexpectedly. Keep his family in mind, his grandson Jonathan Palmer is a member of the USM football team.

Mrs. Ogletree was my first grade teacher at Woodley. Interestingly, she was the front door greeter at the USM president's home for the reception the night I got my PhD. She saw me into the educational system & out of it.

I honestly don't know, and to be honest, I don't see that it has anything to do with the situation at hand.
Powell Olgetree contributed more to Southern Miss than anyone on this board will likely contribute, because he helped lobby the State Legislature to elevate MSC to the University of Southern Mississippi.

My point was not to either diminish his contribution or to create a scandal, it was to bring to mind the devastating divide in the community that this situation has created...divided loyalties, friends and neighbors at odd...it is sad, that was my point. Sorry if it seemed inappropriate, not my intention.

I agree. Powell Ogletree was one of the people who advanced USM to what a lot of us wistfully call its "high water mark." I wish there were a few folks like him in the current administration. <sigh>
I found it interesting that the Hattiesburg American article had a quote from Lucas but none from SFT. It shows how irrelevant Shelby has become in the matter of a few short weeks.....

I think it's more a matter that SFT doesn't care much for people. At the memorial service for Irmi Wolfe last week (long time USM librarian) there was no one from the dome except a secretary. Danforth chapel was packed, there were probably 100+ people standing outside. Lucas was there, Don Cotten, many, many more. No SFT.

Its also a fact that the current administration doesn't know who the people who work here are. None have them have been here long enough to get to know anyone, except for SFT and Cynthia, and those two don't care enough to walk over to Dansforth.

Also, her husband, Jim Wolfe, is a longtime political science professor. They have both given their professional lives to USM. Irmi will be missed (glad to know that Don Cotten, Aubrey Lucas and others with CLASS attended her memorial service).
Class or lack there of, can be found in a great many places. You could start here, and look for indivduals who would turn a thread about a gracious man like Powell Olgetree into an anti-Thames thread.
Nobody on this board is fond of Thames, we all realize that. But, have some dignity and respect for the Olgetree family.
Excuse me, kind sir, but when did posting something on an AAUP message board constitute a way to show respect for those who have passed away? Now, sending flowers or a donation to a favorite charity...that's a more proper way to show respect.
Posting on an anti-Thames board and expecting a less-than-anti-Thames response is simply foolish, my good man!
Seeker, I regret that this thread took a turn away from the original topic. That tends to happen. I doubt if anyone in the USM community meant any disrespect to Mr. Ogletree at all. In fact, one regular poster called me yesterday and shared some great comments about him. May I suggest that we close this thread now and start a new one if further discussion is needed?
Just read on the message board that Irmi Wolfe apparently passed away. Please tell me what happened? She was a friend (I left 2 years ago) In fact I had my last dinner in Hattiesburg at their home
Irmi passed away on Monday, May 30. She had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. Her memorial service was at Danforth Chapel on Friday, June 3. Her daughter and I are friends, and I think it is okay to share the following information that I received from her:
"In lieu of flowers, donations designated in memory of Irmi Wolfe may be made to the Hattiesburg Public Library, 329 Hardy St., Hattiesburg, MS 39401."
I'm sure the family would like to hear from friends at this time.
The Thames and Ogletree families are very distantly related by marriage. Shelby's nephews daughter is married to an Ogletree who is distantly related to Powell. Shelby may have his issues but the rest of the family is a class act who don't deserve to be lumped in with him.

I agree, his "diminutiveness" is in a class of his own.

So the official position of the AAUP and the official AAUP-USM Message board is an anti-Thames organization.
Well, the certainly clears up a great many things for me.

Sorry about spelling. It is too early for this kind of junk.
So every time a person poses a question that is too hard for you, you yell troll. Every time I call out one of your buddies for a foolish statment you yell troll.
What I am tired of is how obtuce this board has become. If this is the official message board of the AAUP, the organization has some serious problems.
Some claim that it's not the offical board, but at the top it says AAUP-USM, it has a link directly to the official AAUP board at USM. On the official website for the AAUP at USM, there is a direct link to this board.
What I am trying to do here, is get you to understand (as AAUP members) is how this board is precieved because of the posts that you get here. Irregardless if you like it or not, but people see this as the public face of the AAUP.
I took your original post as notification of Mr. Ogletree's death, for which I was grateful. I didn't take it as some kind of exclusive condolences or tribute thread. Looking back, I can't even understand why you might have expected it to be that.
You've been on this board long enough to know the drill. Why should your posts not be subject to the whims and vagaries of subsequent posters, just like all the others?

Seeker--
Our posts passed. Now I see that your concern for the AAUP's image is at the heart of your criticism. That's very good of you.

This being a thread that I started has nothing to do with it. It saddens me that a thread informing those on this board of the passing of Mr. Ogletree, was morphed into an anti-Thames thread. I don't care for Thames. You know that by now, but it is disappointing that a thread that should have been regelated to showing a bit of respect for Powell Ogletree (NOT ME) digressed as it has.
I guess that when the majority of post on any board are posted for a selfserving manner, that mine could have easily been labled as such. I posted the thread on Mr. Ogletree because I hoped others (and some did) would post a few fond memories of Mr. Ogletree. He was a fine man, that contributed a great deal to Southern Miss.

Why don't you answer Ram's question, Seeker? Why do you expect to be treated differently on this board? And, furthermore, why do you keep posting here if you hate this board so much?
