I heard rumor about the goings on around COEP. It has not been confirmed, so take it for what it is worth. You may recall reading in the HA that Dr. Thames assured a faculty member that he had no plans for administrative changes or engaging in retribution. Here is the interesting part. An "NCATE consultant" was on campus for the past two days. This consultant, Dr. Robbins, was recruited by the Dome, and was not requested by the COEP or NCATE leadership. Dr. Robbins, former Dean of the College of Education at Ole Miss, seems to operate by a different set of principles than those seen in the top echelons at USM. He had several charges, he apparently told COEP admin. One was to assess NCATE progress. A second charge was to report to the President's office whether the COEP Dean's office could and should be swept clean by the President (deja vue). Speculation is that much of the impetus for this evaluation (I was told that the NCATE folks recently had another outside consultant evaluate their progress) comes from ongoing disagreements between the Dean's office and the chair of the Curriculum Instruction and Special Education department on how that department is run and that department's obligations vis a vis NCATE. That chair of CISE has a close personal relationship with the Dome, whereas the Dean's office does not. The idea that the Dome is even thinking along these lines again should be very scary to education folks as they prepare for the 2006 NCATE visit.
maybe it's the next big boo-boo? Any way to give Crofts the heads-up if this is true? People said ole Sheb wouldn't learn, couldn't learn. Could they be right?
I have thought about informing Dr. Crofts and Dr. Sullivan (the SACS consultant) about the situation. When Carl Martray was canned, there was a tremendous malaise and depression in the college (except in the CISE leadership) that brought NCATE to a halt. Pierce came in and was a healing presence. I'm not sure that even SFT would pull the trigger on this one, though he would love to. If he did, however, this would reverberate throughout the institution in the same way that the Deans' massacre and G&S did, and in some ways it would be worse--it would kill us with both SACS and NCATE. Unless SFT has a really clever plan to pull this off (he is rumored to be digging up any and all dirt he can find on these folks, and he is making their lives miserable in the process--more deja vu), he may have to wait until after SACS and NCATE to pull the trigger on this one.

Plot Outline: A nerdish florist finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed.

He'll learn if the content of posts on this board continue to teach him, guide him, caution him, protect him, shelter him, and alert him. The term "enabling" comes to mind.

I can't imagine that the COEP administration would want to remain in their current positions under such depolorable conditions if the rumors you site are confirmed. I've seen very good people resign from their administrative positions for much less reason that that.
Out of the CISE Dept. the best have left, they have a 5 million dollar lawsuit hanging over them, and a chair who is an idot. NCATE has their number, and I don't think they'll pull off the NCATE Spring 2006 visit in a New York minute. A Call for Comments from NCATE has to be published in Jan. or Feb. in the Hburg American. Some of us have a lot to say, and we'll all be using our names. I know of at least 30 students who are ready to let loose with the truth.

Be a little careful, here. CISE: Hattiesburg is really close to CSI: Hattiesburg and CSI: Nitchampburg, both of whom already post on the board.
If Thames is truly trying to rid of Dean Pierce in CoEP, there's a way Pierce could make things interesting and put him in a bind. Pierce could fire Dana Thames from her department chair position. After all, if just half the reports on this board about her performance are correct, she never had any business running a department.
Anything SFT did by way of a reprisal would put him back under the media microscope and would bring new headaches to the IHL Board--just what they're hoping he won't bring them, as the days count down till May 2007.
Dean Pierce may have one of the most thankless jobs in America. However, I wonder what DT is planning to do for a living once Daddy steps down. It's not like she ever really taught. Is she even certified?

I'm no DT supporter, but why do you think she will be out of a job when SFT leaves? She was a chair before his presidency and before Martray was forced out. She fooled people before, why do you think she can't fool people in the future.
For some background reading, check out the April 9, 2002 HA article "Thames presidency could present conflict of interest with daughter."
Question, who was Dean and Pres when DT became chair?

Martray and Fleming. DT got the nod over Jessie Palmer. What is very odd is that Martray, before he was fired, stood by DT on several big issues that turned into major headaches for him. Yet, when SFT was about to fire Martray, why didn't DT go to the Kitchen Cabinet and say that this would be the kiss of death for NCATE and put a hurting on the college? To this day, I think that Carl has a blind spot here, and can't see what DT had in for him.
Caveat: out of my area of good information here. But, you say Martray "has" -- in the present tense. so, even now?
Carl remains angry at SFT and TH, but I have not gotten the sense that he fully understands the role DT played in his demise. If he does, he has hidden it well.
Margaret Sullivan, SACS consultant, recommended Dr. Robbins after she heard about NCATE concerns. It seems that Carole de Casal teaches everywhere but USM and is not doing a great job with coordinating NCATE.
Dr. Robbins has been a dean at three places. He was just a faculty member at Ole Miss He interviewed everyone and will be forthcoming with recommendations to improve Ed/Psych and NCATE situation. The consultant that Carole and Willie hired is a joke -- got fired from Winthrop and also got kicked off NCATE team.
As for changes, Willie is probably safe for now. his future depends on how much he tries to grasp NCATE. If you knew the deal about Carole, you'd be after SFT to fire her immediately.
I understand they had a good discussion and an exchange of ideas about how to make things better. You may not like DT's personality, but she is sharp and knows her field.

In the know:
The information you have provided makes me think that you are close to the Dome players.
The issue isn't Dr. D. Thames' personality or her knowledge of the reading field. It is her questionable decisions as a chair, and, more important, the fact that she has repeatedly used her personal relationship with the President of the university to try influence events to her benefit in a way that is, at the least, inappropriate. From your posts and your Dome vantage point, this does not seem to be an issue for you. I, on the other hand, find this breathtaking.

Busted ItK! Your last phrase says it all and gives the secret away. The rest of us don't run to Shelby to ask him to fire people.

Careful here. Million retired, not fired, along with three other professors, in a dispute over consulting rights of faculty at Winthrop. He was also not "kicked off" an NCATE team. If you have spoken to NCATE and have a contact person who will verify this, please post this person's contact information. The situation you are referring to involves a disgruntled dean whose NCATE institution was just placed on probation, and whose response was to slam the site visitors.
