Carey Beachfront Campus for Sale
Permalink Closed

WDAM just ran a story on William Carey College possibly selling its 22-acre Coast campus on Highway 90 to out-of-state developers who want the property, probably for condo/commercial development. President Kennedy said the Carey on the Coast campus is looking to relocate to property closer to I-10 and plans to expand its presence on the Gulf Coast. President K. said the college is not considering selling the property due to any financial troubles; in fact, the college will be debt-free very soon.

Good for William Carey! Being right on the beach is not the smartest place for a college campus anyway. I hope they get a big spread closer to I-10 so they can expand. Maybe they'll develop into the University for the Gulf South (Horace Fleming's forward looking term I believe).

With William Carey and Tulane both growing, and with the University of South Alabama just across the border, USM had better get its act together pronto or all it might wind up with is a casino management trade school.

When Fleming, Jim Williams & "Coast 21" were avidly pursuing "expansion" of the Gulf Park Campus, I saw a study that showed that the best location for an upper division campus was off I-10. I think Exit 50 (Ocean Springs) was the optimum, but that particular memory is hazy...

Gulf Park is pretty, but it's not exactly a central, easy-to-reach location. And anything on Highway 90 doesn't provide the type access that is needed for a good campus location, really.
