Cox-Purvis Report

Just 36 hours after a recent CPR praised the merits of Ole Miss outfielder Brian Pettway, he snatched the Boo Ferriss Trophy, recognizing the top college baseball player in the state.  Pettway has been tremendous at the plate all season, and picked up the hardware reward the other night in Jackson.  Congrats.  The Rebels are playing Alabama right now (CSS-TV) in the first round of the SEC baseball tourney in Birmingham.

In other news, the first round of the C-USA tourney in Hattiesburg is going according to plan.  Tulane, TCU and East Carolina are all day-one winners.  USM is currently leading South Florida 3-1 in the last game of the day.  That contest is headed into the 8th inning.  The tournament is likely to be a big boost to the local economy.  Sweet Peppers Deli was sure packed this afternoon following Tulane's big win over UAB.

Lu Harris-Champer's UGA softball team won their regional the other day and are headed to Los Angeles to face UCLA in a best 2-of-3 Super Regional starting Friday.  Good Luck Lu.  We miss you.

EagleTalkers are reporting the West Jones football star turned Golden Eagle Britt Barefoot will be transferring from USM in the near future.  CPR is working on gathering details on this story, and we will hopefully have more to report in the near future.

No word yet on whether Marcus Raines has signed with USM, much less arrived on campus.  He told local media in California within the past 2 weeks that he still has every intention to sign with USM, but could not do so until he graduated from junior college.  One this is for sure, if he's signed with USM and is on campus now as a summer semester enrollee, he probably has no clue where his classes are.  Welcome to the well-oiled machine, Marcus.

Don't bother, Cox-Purvis is not really concerned with accuracy in his/her reporting.

I think stinky cheese man just restated what CPR says here. What's your problem, Baseball Fan?

It has been widely reported that Raines have to attend summer school at his junior college in order to graduate.  Cox-Purvis reports the following:

So, how could he be on campus at USM yet?

Also, it's apparent that CPR is not well versed in NCAA Regulations, or she would have known that the spring signing period (for football) ended April 17th, thus no athlete can sign at this point. Any athlete that signs to play football for the 2005 season, they must be enrolled in school before they can sign.

So I would suggest that if CPR wants to continue to play sports reporter they at least learn a little bit about NCAA regulations or at least read the stories on EagleTalk and not just the message boards. The EagleTalk staffers reported this fact over a month ago.

King -- are you saying Raines will not suit up fall 2005?

I just love the inadequacies of Kudzu King. He just can't wait to twist a CPR into something he can gripe about. KK says

"Any athlete that signs to play football for the 2005 season, they must be enrolled in school before they can sign."

Which means that Raines could be signed EVEN AT THIS POINT without ever having seen the campus, which is the thrust of the Cox-Purvis message. She goes on to say that

"One this is for sure, if he's signed with USM and is on campus now as a summer semester enrollee, he probably has no clue where his classes are. Welcome to the well-oiled machine, Marcus."

See that big word IF, as in "[IF] he's signed"??????

What has become apparent over the weeks is how little Kudzu King and Correction/whoever know about certain sports related topics.

Cox Purvise Report never said anything about signing after April 17.  The whole deal has been shrouded in such secrecy (for good reason) that no one knows anything about Raines' situation.  Everyone is reporting rumors from places like EagleTalk or stories from newspapers in Cali, or whatever.  The HA has provided no details.

CPR had plenty of "if..." in the report.

Kudzu King simply posted what he did to impress all of the aaup ladies with his knowledge of signing date rules (NCAA).  Nothing Cox Purvis said indicated anything about the possibility of signing after any official date.

Does that mean those 20 or so high school players USM signed in February had all been taking a full load of classes at USM since January?

What I am saying is that Raines must be enrolled in school before signing. What the guys at ET are reporting (they had an audio interview) is that Raines will enroll at USM in the second summer semester, which is what mid-July?

What I wish is that CPR would report the entire story and allude to something that is not there. If you don't have the facts, don't try to play sports reporter.

No, those players all signed before April 17th. Any player who signs after April 17th, must be enrolled in school.

Taking Kudzu as accurate, and assuming Raines played two seasons at the juco, it is really sounding like Raines is having some academic difficulties.  He is in need of more time than is usually the case.  Many jucos sign with D-I places in the December after their second season at the juco and then go on to enroll at the D-I a few weeks later in January, as juco grads.  Raines not only couldn't do this, he needs summer semester.

Which is why I think USM never should have signed him in the first place. First, he has a history of bad acting. Second, he is not positioned to succeed academically. Bower has always recruited character, and his players are above average academically, especially now that USM is open enrollment. I guess you have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get an above-average player with two years' eligibility.

You may very well be right on all of this, it is yet to been seen how he will do academically and athletically at USM. But, one thing is for certain if he is as bad as you seem to think, Bower won't keep him around long.

I'm sure that the Athletic Student Services folks will "find" a way to keep him eligible if he ever shows up.
