The Eagles enter the C-USA tourney on Wednesday as the #3 seed. They will face off against #6 USF. Hattiesburg will serve as host of the tournament this year, so Eagle fans should be out in large numbers for USM games.
Meanwhile, congrats to the Ole Miss Rebels for winning a share of the SEC West Championship. Both State and Ole Miss enter the SEC Tournament in Birmingham in the upcoming days. Ole Miss' Pettway is as exciting a kid as we've seen at the plate this season. Should be an exciting tournament all the way around. Also, don't forget about Delta State --- they are inching closer to a national title.
With summer school on the horizon, it's possible we could be seeing a HA interview with Marcus Raines. Be on the look out for it. It should be interesting.
Congratulations on a great year. I look forward to seeing you choke in the regional again.

Just so we understand the pecking order -- I and my collegues in theatre and dance have spent countless hours sweeping floors, cleaning up rehearsal spaces . . it just goes with the job. I don't know that I expect football coaches or basketball coaches to sow grass or mow . . . or to wax the floor. Seems silly. However, there is still a tradition in baseball of the field as something that is quite a bit more part of the art and craft of the game so I didn't view this as indications of a coaching class so much as a different outlook to a sport . . . on the other hand it may just have been a set-up picture (what exactly are you gonna find for an assistant coach to do that looks like activity on a hot day if there isn;t a practice going on?)
You are correct Stephen. Baseball traditionally has had coaches and players take care of the field and it is an art and craft. It wasn't a setup picture, that's for sure.

Thanks baseball fan. I don't getout to the park much these days being a shut in theatre type but I follow the team and one of the reasons I think I've always liked baseball is it has odd similarities to what I do -- exactly as you have pointed out.

Stephen, it does seem silly. It sounds like a royal waste of money. Coaches make much more than custodians or others in buildings and grounds (sometimes called "physical plant." ) But, if high salaried coaches get paid for getting the athletic playing field in order, it is only right that the salaries of our low paid custodians, and other personnel in buildings and grounds, be raised. They get the acdemic playhing field in order - and sometimes at 5:00 AM in the morning!

I heard assistant basketball coach, Steve Barnes say at and Eagle Club luncheon that the first thing he and Eustachy did when they were hired was painting the dressing rooms and coaches offices. He also said that Lee Floyd's paper work was still in his office. For those who don't know Lee Floyd was the first coach to coach at RGC, talk about a place needed a cleaning.

Many faculty members paint their own offices and laboratories. I know I have. But it does seem strange that the university would not prepare a first class office for new personnel, such as coaches, before they arrive on the scene.

And Marie Ferrell and her husband painted the nursing building because it looked so bad and the university wasn't doing it. Correct, nurses?
Guys, this is not a so and so has it worse or better thread. Someone asked a question if basketball coaches had to do general upkeep tasks, I was just answering the question.
if the tradition of coaches/managers keeping up playing field is so strong why not in the bigs?
i suspect the real reason is the revenue stream of football vs baseball in most places
did teddy work on the tennis courts(pre-dorm)? yes
there is a pecking order in coaching. sorry, stephen your yearning for tradition is a little out of date in this case(modern collegiate sports)
and for the case of our present basketball coach finding lee floyd's papers in his office....maybe if the sid keeps on telling this story it will become an urban myth...just like SFT loves USM
So what if it is because of the revenue stream. It is a tradition at all levels until you get into professional baseball.

I'm sorry. After all the regionals USM has won, our baseball program looks feeble. Thanks for reminding us how powerful USM is in postseason play, especially when they host regionals (e.g., 2003) against national powerhouses (e.g., SUBR).
Correct me if I am wrong here, but wasen't UMiss 2 and a BBQ last year in the regional they hosted? As for Southern U, they did beat LSU this year, who finished ahead of UMiss is the $EC race.
Southern Miss has never went two and out in a regional, ever.

Southern Miss has never lost a CWS game either. Undefeated in the CWS.
This is silly, and the OGR didn't start the battle.

And that last stat is amazing too, considering all of the regionals USM has been in. Really.

Man, that's gotta suck! Two-and-out for USM?? And at the hands of my alma mater, the Mighty Black Bears!
By the way, these mid-week wins that USM got over Alabama, Ole Miss, and State, etc., mean absolutely NOTHING!!!!! Those teams didn't put the pedal to the metal against USM because those games don't matter a whole lot.
I like that: USM "2 and a BBQ". Crow tastes good, doesn't it KK?
Often, when a team loses its last game, its fans start the "wait till next year" mantra. Even before this Regional started, this mantra was becoming common over on ET. This is the first time I've seen that one before.

That's going to become a familiar statement in Hattiesburg and surrounding areas: Just wait until next year. Next year, we'll be a top 10 football team. Next year, we'll get to the NCAA Tournament in basketball. Next year, we'll go to Omaha and the College World Series.
Truth is, this could be the best athletics year USM will have for a while. As has been stated on other threads, SFT is messin' with all aspects of the university, not just academics.
To borrow a phrase: Just wait until the Eagle Club gets fed up with losing in all 3 big-time sports.
If my ears didn't deceive me, I heard on CNN this afternoon that according to a recent survey ice skating is now ranked #3 in terms of spectator interest. I realize that we don't have ice skating at USM, but we do have sports other than football and baseball. Does the USM athletic crowd give any attention at all to the "other" sports, or are we just viewed as nerds?
I think you can answer that question for yourself.
When you compete are their large crowds there to watch?
Do you get asked to sign a ball, program, jersey, hat after your event is over?
To be honest the USM sports crowd cares about who is winning, and winning big. Football will always be #1, Basketball has been big in the past, but only when winning. Baseball has a good following because of the sports general popularity in this part of the state. Plus, they win pretty consistantly. Softball had a good following as long as they were winning.
LSU is tied with NW LA 1-1 in the 2nd, Auburn is beating Army 11-0 in the 7th, MS State is down 1-2 to Florida Atlantic in the 3rd inning, and Oklahoma is up on Maine 2-1.
