SFT can still do a lot of damage to USM over the next two years. His inflated ego is bound to get even larger. He is well known for being vindictive and will take revenge on the faculty. Better get busy and hit the job market. If we thought it has been bad since May 2002, we probably haven't seen anything yet. Expect the deans to get meaner, too. The problems in COAL and other colleges with tenure and promotions (approved up to the level of dean and then denied) will escalate all over campus. Southern Miss Community College... might emerge from the ashes left after the Thames era.

I'm as pessimistic as the next battle-weary victim of the Thames regime, but let's not forget that Thames reports to a new boss come July 1. I expect that any acts of vengeance will be reported directly to the commissioner. I also hope and expect that the commissioner will listen in a way that the board at large never has. Everything that the press has reported from the IHL statement so far suggests that Thames has been told to shut up and clean up his messes.
And don't forget that even with a contract extension Thames can still be dismissed quickly if the board wants him out. It's unlikely, but it could happen. At USM, announcing your resignation doesn't keep you from getting fired. Ask Noel Polk.

Somebody needs to compile an anthology of the wit from this board. A day doesn't go by that I don't smile or laugh at some comment. Thanks for this one!
I don't aspire to be on Professor Polk's level by any means, but I was demoted after I resigned. Not quite up there with being fired, but the same general principle.

And we have no reason to assume that Crofts will be commissioner through May 2007. In fact, that's highly unlikely. You can bet that the "permanent" commissioner hired in the upcoming search will be acceptable to all factions on the IHL board, including the Klumb-Ross-Colbert-Davidson group that obviously didn't get Shelby's 4-year extension this year. Next year -- new commish, new playing field. Things can change.
And yes, Shelby can be fired between now & May '07. He can also be asked to retract his resignation & be given a longer extension.

Invictus,
Are you advising us simply to be cautious (which seems wise advice) or are you advising us to abandon all hope? If the latter, I need to go get some Prozac.
We hope Invictus is wrong, but it's not a bad thing to have someone keep us alert to the less pleasant possibilities. The whole sky may not be falling, but we may want to keep our hard hats on for a while longer. Invictus has a lot of knowledge and experience that I for one would not lightly disregard.

I agree with LVN. People are also concerned about the possible "new games" will begin playing. See the thread "IHL painted into a corner". Discussions are about how SFT's relationship to the deans may have changed. Faculty Senate will need to be on its toes this summer.
