I had no idea this was going to happen today! I was busy at work (yes, I do work!) at Vandy...

I think I'm still in shock...and like others, have questions about what this really means for my friends still at USM.

Plus I'm really sad still for all that SFT has gotten away with in the past 3 years or so...how much destruction he has wrought on my beloved university.

So, it's a muted celebration right now, but I plan to have a margarita tonight (and toast the USM Faculty Senate, AAUP, and all my board posting friends) and hope that somewhere, somehow Fire Shelby is joining me (as he/she promised so many months ago!).

And don't forget to include Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer in our toasts! They made the ultimate sacrifice, and as someone else pointed out, if it weren't for their brave actions, it would still be "business as usual" with Shelboo and the henchcrew!

It was almost exactly a year ago that I was waiting with trepidation to hear the results of the hearing involving GS and FG. My wife and I had just bought a house, and we were at the power company trying to get the electricity turned on, and the woman who was helping us was kind enough to let me use her computer to check this board and find out that the hearing had ended reasonably well for Gary and Frank (and I had had real doubts that this would happen). So, it's wonderful to realize that little more than a year later, Shelby is on his way out, Gary is at a place that really appreciates him, and he and Frank Glamser are still in the classroom and (the icing on the cake) are still collecting their "severance" pay even as Shelby is being unceremoniously severed. What a difference a year makes!

By the way, to further justify some optimism, I would note that the fact that Shelby is on his way out should help when the big SACS team arrives, since the problems Shelby created (especially involving shared governance) will presumably be on their way to being remedied once Shelby is gone.

I will never forget May 19, that's for sure!

I think people right now should form a committee to push to name the LAB after Frank and Gary...do it now! And do it as a reminder to all who come after us that shared governance is not some lofty academic goal, but a real and necessary part of a well-functioning university.

And perhaps some enterprising liberal arts-type can write a grant to fund the first ever symposium at USM on shared governance...the Glamser/Stringer Memorial Symposium on Shared Governance!

And, has anyone heard from Stephen Judd or Myron Henry or Dave Beckett? I'm waiting to hear their reactions....

It has only been two years (March 5, 2003) since Frank and Gary were suspended. We will have two more years of hell. Worse than ever. There will be nothing to reign him for two years.

Robert,

First, let me thank you for your contributions to our cause, BTW, we met and talked during your visit, but I was without my mask.

Second, SFT is not afraid of bad press. The past three years have been filled with his trail of damage, broken lives and bad decisions.

True, we can keep on him every step of the way, but that may not be enough to stop him from doing the damage and the facutly crying about it afterwards. SFT has secured his legacy, the WORST president USM has ever had. What does he got to lose? I had an administrator once that did not care if he was remember as a "good" administrator or a "poor" administrator....he just wanted to be remembered. SFT is wounded. I believe he is still dangerous.....

As long as Crofts is around he will keep Shelby in line! Up to and including the unemployment line.

Virginia as president of IHL is no doubt a huge blow to Shelby. I spoke with Roy Klumb a couple of weeks ago, even with Roy's lack of intelligence he knew it was time for Shelby to leave.

In the words of the Three Stooges "i will make it so even you can understand it" it took a while but the IHL finally understood. Kinda like skinning a pig, not worth all the squealing for what little fur you get.

SFT was allowed to save face somewhat, but dont expect Shelby to be around long.

The mutha's going to be with us for two more years and y'all are celebrating like he said he was "going back to teaching" in Fall 2005. Wise up! We're only about 60% done with the reign of (t)error.

There has to be some way to tell the IHL that two years is too long.

The search has to start now. Another Faculty Senate resolution reaffirming this message from earlier this Spring is now in order.

Could this announcement be viewed as the dreaded "one year extension"

Could you take it a step further and say Horace Fleming was more of a red blooded male than Shelby? Remember Horace considered it an insult to be offered a year extension, thus he told the IHL to stuff it.

Yes, I've been thinking about that as well. I believe Horace also said it wasn't fair to the university for him to accept a 1-year extension, as it would keep the university from moving forward. If SFT had any class, he would bow out now.

Also doesn't Crofts have permission to fire Thames if something else controversal happens? If that's the case I doubt it will be 2 years. Might be 4 months since school will be out for 3 of them.

While this is not the news we had all hoped to hear, this means SFT - the vindictive thug - will still be in power for TWO MORE YEARS. He can do much damage in that time. He will go after everyone he believes tried to bring him down. The deans who already have the reputations of being two faced and stretching the truth will make things even worse for the remaining faculty. Remember, they still have to report to SFT.
I would be very careful about having the message board coming out party before the moving vans actually move him from the dome to his lab. Many of the people who post on this board are still on the faculty and staff. We must not put their jobs, promotions, etc. on the line. However, a glass or two of bubbly, wine, or grape juice wouldn't hurt!

Thames' own presidency was in part intended to show up Fleming's for the abysmal failure that Thames considered it. The insistence on having five years in office is at least in part an expression of Thames' need to "outlast" Fleming.

I speculate that SFT wants to hang around to dedicate the Trent Lott Center. Won't it be ready in about two years?
