SFT supports, Trolls and EagleTalkers please gather round. Recently there was an article in The Wayne County News (http://www.wayneconews.com/news.php?story=story04.txt) in which SFT is quoted as saying, "We've also outsourced our bookstore services to Barnes and Noble, and that gives us a guaranteed commission of $1.2 million per year. "Because of those type of decisions and other moves made, Southern Miss now generates more external dollars than Texas A&M. We're currently No. 12 in the nation in external dollars generates while Texas A&M is No. 18."
What do you think? Is this quote accurate? Was SFT misquoted? Are we really number 12 in the country in external dollars and ahead of Texas A&M? Did SFT misspeak and really mean 12th in percent of external funding? Does it make a difference?
However no SFT supporters, trolls or EagleTalk members participated in the discussion. So please provide us with your wisdom in this thread devoted just for you.
Lies, lies and more lies. Read your own thread again.
One of you pitiful profs started whining that Aubrey Lucas was from State Line in Wayne County, and one of us pointed out that "Your hero is from Wayne Co.? . . . hilarious." You just don't get it, do you? You think somebody is going to come in from the AAUP, or SACS, or Wayne County and make everybody do what you want them to do. All this crapola about leadership and power. Your hero Lucas used to have the power but he is dead quiet now, huh? Who's got the power now? Thames does. You want to go to Texas A&M? Go ahead. Aw. You're not good enough? You're stuck at Southern Miss? Too bad. As long as Dr. Thames is signing your paycheck you should be smart enough to do what he tells you. Lead, follow or get out of the way.

Did you respond to the wong thread???? Your post above has nothing to do with the issues of this thread except for the words, "Wayne County". Please try again. Post as mant times as it takes.

The issues of this thread huh? So I have to say what you want me to say or I should go away. read the link you people started
There You Go Again: Frankly I care little about Waynes County or your very opinionated opinion. You obviously don't care a whit about the poor student's whose money you have taken to go to school here.
I can assure you that situation will be changed shortly. Word is getting around among students that a degree from USM isn't worth paying good money for and the whole school will crumble. Soon there will be no more money because the expense of operating USM will far outweigh the advantages and it will be shut down. If you want evidence of this read the facts on the board instead of taking one look at them and closing your eyes and trying to shout them down. I assure you that they will not go away - so read them or just wait for the explosion. I really don't give a rip. I am getting out of here as soon as I can. Away from all of the ignorance that I have seen displayed by the trolls on this board.
Are you really, in your heart of hearts and in the deepest recesses of your conscience, happy with where USM is today under Shelby Thames? If so, can you give us maybe five reasons why? How is USM better today than it was before Thames took over? Your school is in a free fall in terms of its academic reputation, and yet all you seem to want to do is bash the faculty.

And you know a "pitiful prof" posted that because . . . There is no way to know who posters are unless they tell you. This is an open board (explaining for about the hundredth time.)
I don't know if Lucas, or the AAUP is a big threat. AAUP censure will help cripple USM's national reputation (not that you care about that) but SACS does carry a big stick. You need to review the consequences of losing accreditation. They are very, very serious. And you also seem to forget that the present probation is from the LAST SACS review. Another NEW review starts next year.
As an SEC grad married to a Big 12 one, I can tell you that USM is never on any of those school's radar except for an occasional sports meeting. When told of the current administrative lunacies, they shake their heads in disbelief. Otherwise, they never, ever think about us.

Please correct me, but isnt State Line in Greene County, not Wayne County??
If I am correct I expect a full rectraction from "there you go again"
It has been over 5 hours now, and no Trolls, EagleTalkers or SFT supports have dared to touch this thread. Well, the Troll "There you go again" has posted something, but I haven't been able to follow their sophisticated arguments.

Dr. Lucas is from Stateline in Wayne County, MS. Surely there are people in Wayne County who are interested in truth about USM?

not to be argumentative, but stateline IS in greene county....so Mr "there you go again" i would appreciate your apology now. so this entire discussion about wayne county and shelby is moot!!
Half of Stateline is in Wayne County, the other half is in Greene County. I don't know which side of town Lucas is from, and to be honest who cares? The bowtie looks goofy on both sides of town.
One quote I saw on this tread was from "disgusted student", about a USM degree not being worth anything. I sat back and thought about that for a moment. Being that I hold a degree from USM, as you might imagin, this is of interest to me.
As I sit here looking at a pics of myself and my wife crossing the stage at our graduations, I began to wonder. Will I be fired tomorrow when I get to work and my boss sees a degree from Southern Miss on the wall of my office? Will my experience the same? Will any of our grads. I suspect not.
I have always found that it has not a sheet of parchment hanging on my wall, that provided me the opportunity to get a job, keep a job, and move up in my organization. It has been my ability, attitude and work eithic.
I have great pride in being a Southern Miss grad, I know many of you will smile and snicker when you read this, but it's true. I am proud of where I went to school, the individuals I work with and for, are impressed with Southern Miss, because I am the only example of a Southern Miss grad that have.
I have a nice corner office in our building, the guy who's office is to my left is a graduate of the University of Virginia, the guy who is in the office to my right graduated from the University of Maryland. Both, are more than three years older than I am, and have a couple of more years experience with our company. But, neither is trusted with the projects that are entrusted to me. Is this because my degree is better than theirs? Is a Southern Miss degree superior to a Maryland or UVA degree? Many of you will laugh and say heaven's no, but in my world it wins out every day of the week.
The point I am making is that, the name of the school on your parchment has little to do with how successful you will become. If you are depending on a degree to make you successful or give you some sort of self esteem, you have already failed.
Seeker, many of us have children who now attend or who graduated from USM. In that sense, our interests are similar to your interests. You know that, of course, but I just wanted to emphasize that here.
You are right about the value of one's work ethic to an employer. The degree may help get the job, but the work ethic will help one keep the job.

And we don't snicker. Haven't you figured out yet how much most of these folks care?"
LVN you know how jealous my wife gets when you call me pet names.
My point is that if we are teaching our students that they can not make it on their ability, we are failing them. If we have to push our studnets to believe they can only be successful if they are an elite university grad then, we are doing them a disservice.
USM is a long ways from perfect, and you guys know how I feel about the current situation. But, as of now, it looks like USM is on track for SACS probation to be lifted. I am happy about that even if others, are not.
I am thankful that I had Professors at Southern Miss like Alvin Williams, Bob Booth, Dolly Lloyd, and Bill Smith that taught me that my education from Southern Miss was as good as the education that anyone I would be competing against had. Maybe I neively believed them. But, I've never considered myself second rate, I've never looked at an Ivy league grad and felt inferior. If you want to consider Southern Miss second rate, fine. I am not second rate, I am as good at what I do as anyone in the country. I proudly hang my degree on my wall.
Maybe I am just wired differently than everyone else. But, a piece of parchment is just that. If Southern Miss is failing it's students, it's failing them because we have individuals on campus who are trying to tear our Univeristy down, and tell our students they are second rate because they are going to a second rate University.

Obviously being able to tell the tale of the buffoon who tanked your former university will come in handy in your Richmond office too. Interesting and outlandish. Great corner talk.

Seeker,
If any faculty member is actually told students in their classes that they are attending a second rate school, that faculty member should find another career. I can't imagine a faculty member doing that. On the other hand, it would also be improper for an administrator to tell students, prospective students, alumni, and the media things that are clearly not true.

As for the quality of my degree, it is top notch. Or, I have fooled one of the most prestigious consulting firms in the world into believing that it is.

Actually, I know Aubrey grew up in Greene County. The US Census shows Stateline in Greene County but not in Wayne. The only reason I know that it matters is the poster mentioned Aubrey from Wayne county not supporting faculty, yatta, yatta, yatta
I do find your comments interesting about your diploma. I think you are exactly right about performance after your are in the job, however I hope you are not suggesting that a degree from UVA or Duke would not get you more opportunities than a degree from Univ of Phoenix(unfortunately USM is much closer to caliber of Univ of Phoneix than TAMU). I have no idea of you age, but 25 years ago a college degree was much more valuable than today. An undergraduate degree today is fairly common, so you need something to distinguish you from other applicants. As a rule, a graduate of Vanderbilt probably has achieved more(in the employers mind) than a graduate of Troy State. Keep in mind a renowned scholar in ecomomics probably is going to expose his/her students to more than an economics professor at SW Missouri State(the learning is up to the motivated student)
A distinguished(Tier I, if you will)university has a place just as a regional university and community college serve a purpose. Just like all great athletes dont get their start at a major university all successful scholars/businessmen/physicians, etc dont attend Tier I universities but I think everyone would agree football players at Univ of Michigan get more attention than Univ of Central Florida.
(all the institutions mentioned were for illustration only, no opinion of academics or athletics)
What I meant by a degree being worthless is this. In this day and age you almost have to have a degree to get a good position anywhere. It is up to the individual to keep it and advance. Though I still hold that if the instructors are not good then the advantage is with the competition. If that isn't true then why go to school at all. There are still some good professors around and when I graduate I will be able to hold my own just about anywhere. It is the next generation of students that will suffer because all the good professors will be gone then - that is if the school is still standing. I have heard from several good sources that this years SACS accreditation will probably be okay but next years will not. That is the scheduled visit. They will be looking for different criteria and the information will not be there because the professors and admistrators with the history are gone or going.
The professors are not being alarmist or trying to frighten anyone. They are very serious and that is why most are leaving. Or I should say one of the reasons...there are others such as working conditions, etc.
Please note the difference between Seeker and you, illustrated in the above posts. Seeker offers opinions and backs them up with reasons. Then we smack him around a little (metaphorically) and convince him of the error of his ways. But the point is, we can have a dialogue. He doesn't just jump on here, act mysterious, insult people, and then disappear (or come back with new insults.)

Now this is particularly alarming. Becausing it sounds like, you are saying that we will have individuals leave Southern Miss, who will be taking information with them with the intent to sabatoge the University. I think that this may be part of what happened with the distance learning problems.
I know that lots of folks have a disdane for Thames, but I shutter to think that there are individuals who will intentionally cause great harm to USM and it's students because of their opinion of Thames.
Seeker, I think that you are deliberately misunderstanding me because you don't have a good answer for my post. This is making me think that you are not the business man you say you are. However, I will give you the benifit of the doubt and say that is not what I said. Professors are leaving with the knowledge in their heads. They are not leaving because of that. They are leaving because other universities see the problems that we are having and are offering them better positions that they might have turned down before Thames became president. I can't see even one good reason for them to stay. Can you?
quote: Originally posted by: Counter Point Are we really number 12 in the country in external dollars and ahead of Texas A&M?
Ahead of Texas A&M? Har de har har! Or as my Aggie brethren would say, "You've gotta be $hittin' me." I think Shelboo has been drinkin' a bit too much acid-laced koolaid if he can make this assertion with a straight face.

If an individual is not happy at Southern Miss, I would never attempt to give them a reason to stay. Because, if you are not happy in a position, then you will not preform well in that position. If a professor is not happy at USM, by all means they should leave if they have the opportunity. If you as a student are not happy at USM, a transfer maybe needed as well. I know what it is like to be in a position where you are not happy. I left a very good, well paying job, because I was not happy with the corporate structure.
I understand the importance of having good faculty. I think I have a better understanding of the situation than many of you give me credit for having. I also, know first hand, just because an individual has been a faculty member for a long time, that dosen't mean they are very good at what they do. Many times individuals who are at a position for too long become stagnet. A change is good for the individual and organization. Sometimes a person with longevity becomes very self-important, and is more concerned with self than organization. I have seen this in HS, college, and in my professional career. Just because an individual is young, that dosen't mean they will not do a good job.
If we have faculty members with SACS responsibilities, that are leaving, and they do not pass along the information needed to accomplish the tasks that will need to be done, that is shameful. It can be spun in different ways, but it changes not the fact, that they are intentionally doing harm to the university because of petty, spiteful, self-indulgences. If an individual would do this, I wonder if they are worthy of a job at a more "respected" University.
As for who I am, believe what you wish. That dosen't change who I am, what I think, or what I will post.
