Unless I am seriously mistaken and things have changed during the past few years, one does not "apply" for membership in Phi Beta Kappa in the way that one "applies" to join the Book-of-the-Month Club. There is a pre- selection and prospective members are "invited" to join. At least that was the way it was intended to be.
