pay for preview?
Permalink Closed

I just noticed that we're charging new students and transfer students $75 to attend the Summer Preview (orientation). Have we always done that? I didn't know students had to pay to be oriented......

stinkycheese man,

Which department grants the academic credit to students who attend preview?

I thought there was a time when the credit for "preview" was awarded in one of the academic departments. Maybe that has changed. One way to know is to ask a student. I hope somebody will ask a student who has recently experiened preview report back to this board.

As a program head I can reinforce scm -- it is general studies and not the department.

Students get USM credit for attending school orientation? Wow, things are even worse than I thought.

Okay, say Sally New Student brings her cat too. Will USM grant it credit? Or can it enroll in Economic Development at least? A Ph'D in ED can't be that much harder than orientation I figure ;P

We got 1 credit of general studies for preview in the early 90's when I started.  This is nothing new.

Hmm...

If USM wants to dig its way out of the 4th tier, getting rid of course credit for attending orientation would be a good way to start

Clemson orientation is an extremely well organized series of events that brings large groups of incoming freshmen to campus on several dates each summer.  Nobody thinks they need to be offered course credit to get them to attend.

robert--the preview credit was present when we were 3rd tier and it's present 4th tier. it appears to be a constant. frankly, if we want to move off tier 4, i think there are a lot more things we ought to be focusing on than the 1 hour of credit for preview. and don't forget the preview credit is a product of shared governance--was approved by the academic council. note my hint of cynicism.

scm, I took RC's post to say that if USM wants to look like "a real university," it will cut out credit for attending preview.

ham--i took it the same way. i think it's the least of what will make us look like a "real" university (as opposed to the opposite of a real university). maybe we ought to take a look at some of the courses we give three hours of "real" credit for.

Also of concern, what about kids who can't come up with $75? Does their financial aid kick in early enough to cover that?

scm, okay.  I agree it's a low priority thing right now, but it's also a low cost change to make --- just stop giving credit for it.  Your other suggestion would require a higher cost action --- forming a task force to scour the bulletin for bad classes.  That's why I think RC suggested we simply make the move to stop counting Preview for credit.

lvn--by the time they've come to preview, if they're living in a dorm, they've already had to make a $150 dorm deposit.

I think, more than anything though, giving students credit for attending these orientation sessions sets the tone that credits are almost "intellectually worthless"--or that they can literally "be bought."

I mean, if I can get a credit for sitting around and listening to someone talk about the dining plan, why should I have to go to an actual class to get my next one?

Deceased equine issue. Let's refocus. Worry about this down the road.
