Shared Governance at TAMU

This is how they do it at Tier 1 schools...

Seems like I remember a time when that was how it was at USM. Nobody wanted to serve on faculty senate because nothing much was happening. Now some won't serve because they are afraid.
Take note IHL: when things are going well, things are quiet.

We can only wish for some dull times.

“ Here, there is no fight going on so the rest of the faculty work on their own stuff,” Fike said. “Faculty aren’t concerned when governance is going well. It’s kind of dull and that’s really nice.”

Oh, to be dull again, instead of wurl' class.

Oh, to have institutional leadership again, instead of a bidness principal.

A look at shared governance, University of Iowa style:

Michael Hogan, the new provost of the University of Iowa, recently spoke at the annual meeting of the AAUP Chapter there, stressing the need for faculty involvement in the tough decisions facing academia. He also warned about the danger of basing decisions purely on financial considerations, warning that it would damage basic science research.

Could we take up a collection to have him kidnapped and brought here? I'm in for ten bucks!

if you got him here you'd have to tie him down, or he'd leave right away. the closest we got to hiring an administrator from U of Iowa was for AD years ago--pre-McClellan. Brought this guy in from Iowa--was pretty impressive. Was heard on WHO (major radio station in Iowa) a couple of days after his interview here and said there was no way he'd come to USM. Public schools were too bad.

Stinky,

Gosh you're a downer.  I'm going to buy one of those kids' magic kits that has a perpetually full  glass and give it to you when we finally meet.  You're smart, you're savvy, you're knowledgeable.  It would be nice if you were occasionally encouraging!

Stinky,

Don't get me wrong, I love you to pieces (in an anonymous board genderless kind of way) but I would occasionally like you to dump everything you know and would recommend in a learn from our mistakes, forward thinking, there is a way out of this mess kind of way.
