The view from HWY 49
Permalink Closed

I was passing through your fair city this morning. Passengers who accompany me on that route(HWY 49) usually OHHH and AHHH when they see the football stadium and the ROCK sign across the field in the stands. The football stadium is in full view in all its spendor. Today I noticed a vast hole in the earth in front of the stadium. Much to my amazement, I have learned that the vast hole is the future site of the Trent Lott Economic Development Building.

Do you chaps in Nitchampburg realize that if a building is constructed on that site the view of your football stadium will be obscured from view? No longer will my passengers OHHH and AHHH at its splendor. The first indica of your university that they will see will be that ugly railroad overhang across HWY 49.

Who determined the site for that new building? Were they not aware that it will obscure the view of the stadium? Were the posters on EagleTalk asleep when that decision was made? How about the IHL? And the athletic boosters who were unhappy with your former presidient Fleming? Surely your university is not letting some academic building get in the way of athletics.

Our "leaders" chose that location to advertise the "state-of-the-art", "one of a kind", "world class" Economic Development Center.  The athletic supporters should not be concerned about an academic building blocking the view of the stadium.  Faculty are of the opinion that there is very little "academic" about this ED program.  The building needs to be located near Hwy-49 so access to the drive-up window will make it easy to pick up a degree on your drive to the coast.

I think the plan in 2000 when this was proposed was to have it near Liberal Arts building. They had a drawing of it that I saw. That was the site. I am almost sure of it. Who, but Shelby, would have put it where the hole now is.

In reality, location was one of the stipulations that Lott insisted upon before agreeing to help raise funds for the project.

He insisted the only way he would help is if he got Hwy 49 frontage for the building that would bare his name. Doubt me, ask around.......

That's just what we need to go along with Nitchampsburg. A building with the name of a huge Ole Miss's supporters name on it . Travelers down 49 will love it.

Not just an Old Mrs supporter, but an Old Mrs Cheerleader......I've never trusted male cheerleaders......there's just something wrong about it.

Wasn't Dubya a male cheerleader?

It would help if a flashing neon sign with a moving arrow were placed beside the new building: "Football Stadium in Rear." That way the highway 49 passersby would have a chance of getting a glimpse of the stadium as they whizzed by the campus.

In all seriousness ........ could this adversely affect football recruiting?  Many high school athletes and their families travel that road on the way to the Coast. They never set foot on campus but they do see the stadium as the pass the campus. Some of them might actually visualize themselves playing there in a black and gold jersey. That memory might be called up when the football recruiter comes calling. It is currently a spectacular first look at the stadium when prospective athletes come to campus. I'm surprised there was no opposition from Joe Eagle when that location was selected for the new building.

I am reasonably confident that Horace Fleming would have never selected such an athletically unfriendly site for the building.

This is true.  In fact, that site was discussed in a campus planning committee that Fleming appointed during the last couple of years of his administration.  The site was rejected for an academic building because it was felt that the view from 49 and the tailgating space (and parking space adjacent to the stadium) were all very important places for the alumni and athletic supporters.

Why does it matter where the building is located? The fact that USM will have a center for Economic Development is embarassing enough.

Why does it matter whose name is on the building? Lott got some of the money for the building. Put his name on it. It won't tarnish the reputation of USM any more than it already has been.

Why does it matter that Lott went to Ole Miss? This inferiority complex with respect to Ole Miss and State is getting to be a pretty tired story line. Ole Miss and State are better schools with better students. Get over it.

If they are a better school, with better students, then without a doubt they must have better faculty, and always have.

Or better leadership & better political connections. And the latter might be exactly why the Lott building is going up where it's going. The location of the new building has a "lott" to do with giving the Trentster his own gigantic billboard on Highway 49. Political advertising works on the same principles as football recruiting.

Along those lines, Sen. Eugene McCarthy once opined that politics was a lot like football. One has to be smart enough to understand the game & dumb enough to think it's important.

Kudzu, go look at the list of where USM people have left for the last 2-3 years.  Ohio State, Iowa, Florida, Georgia Tech, Tulane, Texas A&M all come to mind without looking back on it.

I'm so tired of the same arguments.  Kudzu King, this university got more qualified people than it paid for or deserved.  In part, that was because this was a nice place to live.  It is no longer a nice place to live.  Under good leadership, the university could have blossomed.  The years of mismanagement (and neglect) have taken their toll.  Shelby's hundred days of destruction makes it almost unsalvageable.

I made that statment for one reason. Because many people here have no problem bashing the admin, alumni, studnets, community, but are the first to write a letter to the editor when someone bashes them.

If the school and students are inferrior, so is the faculty. Get over it.

Kudzu King,

Mississippi State is certainly better with Noel Polk's presence. If USM continues to flush faculty elsewhere it'll be destined to become #8 among the public colleges in Mississippi, that's for sure. It sounds to me like you take glory in USM's demise, Kudzu.

I know Knowle Pork is a minor god here. That's great you guys need someone to look up too. If you want to believe that him moving to MSU is good for them great. That's fine. He writes funny little letters to the editor that bash everyone but, you guys, so I guess that's good enough for hero status.

But, let me ask you this.....where is you're hero.

That doesn't surprise me. Fleming was a greater supporter of athletics than some of the good old boys would have you believe. As it stands now, the stadium will be screened from view and the tailgating area diminished. Those who wanted Fleming out should have thought those things through more carefully. They got what they asked for. They should have been more careful.

Kudzu King, you are evidently disgruntled with USM - the students, the faculty, the whole banana. You are posting your disgruntlement on this thread that is dedicated to the new building blocking the view of the stadium. Are you unhappy with the location of the new building being constructed in front of the stadium? Do you also dislike like the hot dogs sold at the football games?

If my memory serves me correctly KK, you are a business person in Hattiesburg.  Therefore, if the inferior students and inferior faculty shop at your business, using the distributive property in mathmatics, your business then is inferior and so are you.

Now, before you get your shorts in a bunch, when a person begins to 'bash' another it comes back to bite them in the backside.  USM is in self destruct mode, even I can see that from far far away.  You need to deal with that and decide what you are going to do about it. The faculty is doing the best job they can under the dire circumstances they find themselves in. As far as the students go, you lower the standards, you takes your chances.

Consider this, and maybe pass it on to other business persons, if USM folds, and all of the faculty and students leave, who will shop in your business?  How will you keep the doors open? Or, the other possiblity here is that USM becomes a 'trade school' with lower functioning students and non tenured teachers (don't want to degrade the term professor) then there still won't be as much money floating around the community.  What is good for the community is also good for USM, and vise versa.  It takes both to be productive and grow reaching the fullest potential possible.  The only growth SFT has brought to USM is the growing discontent of the people there who are doing their darnest to educate those who come to class.
