He did not say he was outraged at the criticism of Toy, just at the criticism of a Jeff Bower hire. While I disagree with him, his letter was reasonable and to the point.

RE: Ken Hall outraged at criticism of Toy and Marcus!!
There are 2 good editorial cartoons in today's Printz. One on the Raines signing. Shows a prisoner telling another he is busting out at nightfall. He asks if the other wants to go along. The other says "Nah, I got a football scholarship."

His letter was reasonable except for the part about disagreeing with Noel Polk - Polk said nothing about the Raines hire per say - Polk criticized the head of the USM Foundation for threatening with violence those who disagreed with him. This letter does not address that issue at all.
When I read it again in the print version, I realized that he should have referenced Mr. McLaughlin's remarks. OF course we have no idea of how his letter may have been edited. I always give letter writers a little bit of "benefit of the doubt" -- but he should have been more outraged by the McL. remarks than by the criticisms. Did you get the drift that he personally had done something to be be "forgiven" for ?? That was somewhat unclear. It's interesting how differently things sometimes "read" online vs. print. Why is that??

USM's Thames 'trusted' staffers
...I've supported Dr. Thames primarily because I knew a couple of his detractors and knew that if they were for someone, I'd be against him and vice-versa....

Professors want to hide the truth?
...I see where the two professors have requested a closed, confidential hearing...
... I wonder if perhaps there is something Dr. Thames wants us to know. I also wonder if there is something the professors don't want us to know....

USM hearing should be open
...You usually request an open hearing if you want all facts to be made public. You usually request a closed hearing if you do not want all facts to be made public. I hope the hearing will be made public. I suspect we will then learn that Dr. Thames acted properly....

Thames can take USM to next level
... I recently retired after 37 years in commercial banking. During the last 20 years I served as a bank president. I can truthfully say that if any of my officers had done what the two professors did, I would have fired them immediately.
I supported Dr. Thames in this controversy. I believe that he can take USM to a higher level, but only with the support of both the rest of the administration and the faculty. However, I doubt that this faculty, which has an exaggerated sense of its importance, will ever understand that.
