The purpose of this forum is to create an opportunity for faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to offer input regarding the content of the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) as it is developed by the QEP Leadership Team. Satisfying the SACS Principle of Accreditation 2.12, the QEP is an important element of our reaffirmation process. (Core Requirement 2.12: The institution has developed an acceptable Quality Enhancement Plan and demonstrates that the plan is part of an ongoing planning and evaluation process.)
The Southern Miss QEP will focus on improving our students' oral and written competencies. The QEP Leadership Team is working to determine the methodology, learning outcomes, interventions, and assessment tools that will be used to help our students. All comments are reviewed by committee members and are taken into consideration during the planning process.
The Web site for this forum is http://www.usm.edu/qep. There is also a link to the Web page for Department of Institutional Effectiveness. The forum will be managed by a planning analyst from the Department of Institutional Effectiveness.
Please take advantage of this QEP Open Forum. Your input is important to us. Thank you in advance for your interest.
And all of you faculty teaching capstone courses in your discipline, get in line to attend the "training courses" which you will have to attend so you can "coach" your students in communication skills. Never mind that they have taken a goodly number of hours in those areas previously, and that the grade distributions indicate the majority of students in those courses were awarded A's and B's. This is "Quality Enhancement" according to the QEP group.
Be careful with your criticisms. Many of us are on the qep group and believe in helping our students be more qualified in speaking and writing. Why would you want to trash something that helps our students? They do not come to us with great skills in these areas so we need to go the extra mile to help them
This sounds like a pretty decent QEP. From what I've heard & read -- I've not gotten to "enjoy" working on a QEP (yet) -- many schools either over-reach or don't reach far enough. Communication skills across the university is a good one, conceptually. Good luck!
we'll see, as far as QEP's go. lots of issues to be ironed out. in some ways, an attempt to solve problems in our relatively new general education curriculum revision. not sure that's an appropriate use for a QEP.
After three years of being lied to, mislead, beaten severely about the head, shoulders and butt, step up to the plate USM faculty. Help SFT get to brag about the QEP program he single handedly accomplished. Also jump on the treadmill of SACS mountains of paperwork and win one for the Gipper. We know you can do it, we were just kidding about you being overpaid and under performing. We have learned our lesson, if you will just help out in this crucial time, you will see that everything has changed. Notice how there has not been any debacle in the past six months, strike that, last three months, strike that also, the last month or at least the last three weeks.
If this appeal does not work, we will appeal to your professional integrity and your commitment to students. If you cannot win it for the Gipper, win for the students who will thank you and never forget your efforts. Of course, I will forget in about an hour, but focus on the students.
If we can pull this off, I can hang around and reduce the quality another notch, bring in 4,000 new unqualified students and make this University the biggest in the State. Of course it will be much inferior to what it was previously, but being the biggest is more important than quality. After all, my supporters do not want potential employees who are smarter than they are; it makes it difficult to exploit them. Remember that my supporters and dumber than a box of boulders or they would have not bought into all of the things I have proposed or accomplished. Just keep saying to your self, Wurl Class, Wurl Class, Wurl Class. I do it all of the time. It keeps your mind off of the reality of what is happening.

Except for zero-based budgeting, Lisa's resignation, Toy's assault, and one more IHL meeting where they didn't can him but maybe these don't rise to debacle level.

It's time for the faculty leadership (the heads of AAUP, Faculty Senate, and Academic Council, at least) to make a clear statement to Crofts and the IHL: If SFT is renewed as president (over repeated pleading to replace him with haste), their expectation is that a thoroughly demoralized faculty will simply stop working on SACS, or for that matter on anything not contractually required. Game over.
One of the factors in "Walt's" timetable leading to four more years of Shelby Thames was a complete lack of protest from faculty members who are expected to do a mountain of SACS-related work, while being lied to by some of Thames' lieutenants and trashed by others.

Robert and "time is running out", I have reason to believe, but can't state absolutely, that this message was conveyed somewhat to Commissioner Crofts by at least one of the faculty groups who met with him. I don't know if it was clearly pointed out or just strongly implied. Let's hope this rumor is true.
Reporter, I gained the same impression, can't go into details. Crofts has been around the block -- don't imagine it would be very hard to convey a message. He has to know (it's certainly no secret) that everybody who can has made an "exit plan."

Yes, Tiro, that's precisely what some folks on the IHL board would dearly love to see happen. In the final analysis, people are judged not by what they say but by what they do. And their actions are not judged by their stated intentions but by the outcomes thereof.
The IHL board has repeatedly demonstrated that it doesn't give a rat's a$$ about what's happening at USM. Repeatedly. Over and over. More than one time.
I think the message is clear.
Shelby won't go before June '06 & IHL will not begin the search process until around January of that year. They probably already have a good idea who the next president will be. Same as last time.

Let's crown King Kenbot now, maybe that will help SFT make the decision to leave. At least we are now all convinced that anyone can not be worse than Shelboo
