After reading the "Gumbo" thread (how funny!), I thought I'd post one of my favorite lunchtime conversations: The number of made-up traditions at USM that have emerged or have been forced under SFT.
Most schools have athletic traditions: LSU's Chinese Bandits, Texas A&M's hand signals, the Texas Longhorn Hand Signal, etc., etc. However, these traditions are formed normally: from the bottom up. Fans start them and they get adopted over time into the "official" "fan handbook." SFT, though, likes to create traditions from the top down (as usual). Here are some of my favorites:
1. Nitchampburg 2. Saying "To The Top" every time the football announcer says "Southern Miss." 3. Reviving the "Nasty Bunch" cheer, even though USM's defense isn't called the "Nasty Bunch" with regularity any more. 4. Calling Reed Green Coliseum "The Greenhouse," then ceasing to call it that when James Green is fired. Subsequently begin calling it "The Coliseum." 5. One University class ring.
What about that area at the south east corner of campus? Something like "the grove?" They put up the white sign to identify the area, but I didn't even take the time to read it because it seemed so fake.

lurker, I believe it's called "The District" --- a place where tailgating now occurs at football games.
I particularly like the "tradition" of every male administrator at USM wearing a gold tie every day because Shelbo wears a gold tie every day. They remind me of baby ducks waddling lock-step behind the mama duck.

Well Mother Duck. I guess that's how the saying "Birds of a Feather" originated.
Mentioned on another thread so I can't take credit for it but . . . Taking new faculty to Barnhills for lunch during orientation. Thankfully, I arrived when there was still a modicum of class under the previous administration. Accordingly, I am left wondering if they are bussed over or, hopefully not, forced to walk over.

Sorry Roy, I started a thread about how goofy the statements on the Nitchampburg sign are. I thought I should kick your really good thread up too.
