Subject: The Passing of Dr. Horace W. Fleming

Earlier today Dr. Horace Fleming, Distinguished University Professor of Educational Leadership and former Mercer Provost, passed away at home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 65.

Dr. Fleming served Mercer University with great distinction on two occasions, as Executive Vice President and Provost from 1992 to 1997 and most recently as Provost. Between his two terms of service at Mercer he served as president of the University of Southern Mississippi.

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Fleming for three years. I found him to be gracious, thoughtful, humble and very dedicated to Mercer University. He was a close friend and confidant to me and was loved by many at the University and throughout the country.

I am sure you will want to keep Dr. Fleming's wife, Steve, and their children, Patrick and Susan, in your thoughts and prayers. Once funeral arrangements are finalized, we will pass that information along to the University community. If you would like to send a note to his family, you may send it to 118 Wimbledon Lane, Macon, GA 31211.

Thanks for posting that Mary Ann. I'm very sad to hear of this.

Dr. Fleming was a driving force behind major technology upgrades on campus. He also tried to defend USM in the face of IHL bias.

Horace Fleming was a good person. He will be missed. Another star sparkles in the sky.
