Now is the time for IHL to get a leader to Jackson. Tom Meredith formerly of Old Miss has been terminated as chancellor of the U Georgia system. He needs a job, and once those Old Miss folks find this out they will send a moving van for him, which is just fine with the good people of GA.
He got into the fight when UGA president Michael Adams decided it was time for AD Vince Dooley to retire. Many opposed the Board's backing of Adams, including Meredith's strong stand as to who was in charge. The UGA Foundation, which holds over a half billion in endowment funds opposed Adams's approach to all this, which wasn't a velvet glove approach. Adams is one of the most arrogant people you will meet. Well, the Foundation is now handing over all assets and dissolving. The price, in turn, I think, was that Meredith goes. He is on his way back to Mississippi, I think, very soon. See today's Atlanta Journal Constitution, front page.
as the atlanta constitution journal story indicates it's more complicated than the UGA foundation story. lMeredith got cross wise with the governor over advocating mid-year tuition increases. he later backed off that. he also threatened to apply for the University of Tennessee presidency after the regents hadn't paid him what they had agreed to. and a number of other issues.
Are you at liberty to reveal the significance of your nom de plume? I always enjoy your posts, but I always wonder why you chose that name. Just curious -- not important to know if knowing would mean you'd have to kill me.
it comes from the book "stinky cheese man and other fairly stupid tales" by jon scieszka. "run, run, run, as fast as you can. you can't catch me cause i'm the stinky cheese man."

Thanks! I thought that maybe you were Monique's French chef.
Oh, cher Sympathizer! You do understand! It is only in recent times that one is able to procure the necessities of life in Hattiesburg. Good cheese, good wine, a decent croissant (note to JavaWerks -- the croissant should not be cold. Quite unpleasant.) Alas, my means are not up to a private chef -- the chauffer was difficult enough. One wonders if inadequate wages drove Jean-Claude into the economic sleight of hand development field, or was it too-frequent trips to New Orleans for a really, really good po'boy. (Alors, did you think I ate only snails??) One enjoys the luxuries, but at a chef, one must draw the line. Although one would so enjoy a really good crepe. However, Miss Angleterre is quiet efficient at the stove, and usually arranges a satisfactory lunch. Breakfast, of course, is the cafe-au-lait and brioche, or croissant, and perhaps some fruit. But Miss Angleterre goes home often at what she calls "a decent hour" and one fends for oneself at supper, perhaps some strawberries and wonderful Brie. And champagne of course, which enables me to do my very clearest thinking. In fact, I was wondering if M. "Toy" person might do to switch to champagne from whatever it was that he was drinking before. Apparently scotch and water, or whatever, damage the thinking apparatus to a horrifying degree. With champagne, of course, one savors, and enjoys the petite bubbles.
The account of the recent bus trip was most droll. I laughed so much that Dervish came running to my side; the dear petit chien must have thought I was in great distress, but it was only the deepest good laughter, which we all need so badly.
Interesting article in the Chronicle yesterday, "U. of Georgia moves to Cut Ties With It's Foundation, an Apparently Unprecedented Split" by Paul Fain.
Excerpt:
"After nearly splitting apart last year, the University of Georgia and its private fund-raising foundation appeared on Thursday to be finally bringing an end to their stormy relationship -- a breakup that experts said would be without precedent in American higher education."
And from the Board of Regents, University System of Georgia Website (wwwusg.edu) a quote from Joel Wooten, Board of Regents Chair in a press release from yesterday indicates the reports of Tom Meredith's "termination" (first post in thread above) are, at a minimum, premature and possibly erroneous.
Excerpt:
"Wooten emphasized the fact that the evaluation process has not yet been conducted. "For the record, the Board has not voted to dismiss the chancellor," he stated. "In fact, the Board has not made any decision regarding the renewal of the chancellor's contract. We intend to maintain our customary process." The board chair also strongly noted the protocol under which the Board of Regents operates. "No single member of the Board of Regents has the right to preempt the protocol and decision making of the entire 18-member board," he said."
Wooten then goes on to praise Meredith's accomplishments.
