Word on the street is that Science and Technology had about 30 searches this year, but only about 10 positions have been filled. Can anybody confirm this?

I find it very interesting that no one form CoST has confirmed or denied this.  What is going on it that college?  All we hear about is CoB and CoAL.  This poster had it right, "We gave a party but nobody came".

This is correct. There are several reasons for this, but one big one is that Dean Gandy is making some departments pay part of the 9 month salary of new faculty with non-E&G money, i.e. development funds. Another reason is that some departments can't find outside chairs willing to take the job, including the Dean's own department (physics) and the President's department (polymer science).

You may want to include Math as one of the depts. who can't find a new chair.

They can't find a chair for polymer? I had not heard that . . . .

I'm sorry for the faculty in those departments. I know how we are on pins and needles in theatre and dance after having interim departmental management for a year. It is sapping -- it is hard to move forward and make long range decisions. Given all of the chnages over the last few years -- it is the WORST time to be without a permanent chair.

Good luck to all of you out there who are still searching or worse, those of you who have closed your searches. I really do feel your pain.

polymers has always had problems getting a chair. the faculty have active research programs, they don't want/need the grief of being a chair, and they get paid more (due to the way grants pay for the summer) being a faculty member.

Aha! More history . . . and it makes sense.

I've heard that physics has been turned down by two candidates.

Also, it's one of the most fractious departments on campus...there's no unity there. Just a bunch of folks dedicated to the almighty dollar and showing each other up. No wonder no one wants to be chair of PSC!

I heard a rumor of folks leaving in Administration of Justice (formerly Criminal Justice).  Can anyone who has the facts confirm this?

Foreign Languages was required to submit two "acceptable" names for position of department chair to the Dean after being forced to do an outside search which garnered only 7 complete dossiers, according to chair search faculty. Two names were dutifully submitted knowing full well that the second name was only marginally acceptable. Of course this is the person that vonHerrmann and Pood chose to be chair of the department.  Not Bill Powell-- Faculty Senate President-elect who actually may have an impact on re-creating a better university, a man who had been recommended to be chair by Dean Harper three years ago before disaster struck on campus.  And now, instead of knowing what it might feel like to be a great department with a phenomenal chair, we risk mediocrity.  English and History get inside searches every time they lose a chair. Hmmm. I'm glad for them. But why not us? And the the answer is... punishment for simply asking for what we know would be best.

So today the joke in the department was: What are the similarities between the DFLL and an alzheimer's patient in a whore house? You can't figure out why you've been screwed and are amazed that you have to pay for it.

The award winning buyadoctoratedegree department seems to be growing at a perfectly hyper pace and then there's more creation of new positions for graduates.
