No rush: USM upgrades set to wrap in '07

AD Giannini originally set sights on 2006 for conclusion of $22.5M improvements to football stadium

...So, after another round of talks earlier this week with the trio of architectural firms working on the expansion of Roberts Stadium, the decision was made to not rush the project.

That means that the construction at the south end of the football stadium will be finished in time for the 2007 season rather than 2006....

...The $22.5 million expansion, which would include 30 luxury suites as well as stadium club seating, is just one of the projects that remain on Giannini's and USM's drawing board....

..."I'll say this for Mr. Giannini, he's got vision," said Rick Trusty, president of the Jackson chapter of the Eagle Club. "All of those kind of things, isn't that what college sports is coming down to now, keeping up with the Joneses?"...

USM would be better advised to forget about the Joneses and concern itself with regaining its position among the pack of third tier schools.

"expansion of the stadium to over 40,000 . . . even though USM rarely sells out the 33,000-seat stadium now."

Judging from these figures, I can certainly see why there's no rush with the stadium job. Maybe they should take a look at the academic side of campus.

" . . . will allow USM to issue bonds for the construction that will horseshoe the south end of Roberts Stadium."

Another bond issue?

Oh, but weren't we assured that no bond money would be used for the football stadium construction? Uh, huh.

"all the suites have been spoken for, with a $5,000 non-refundable deposit placed on them all. He said USM has 20 contracts in hand, and expects to have them nearly all in hand after this weekend .....the annual revenues from the boxes — which will run from $31,000 to $26,000 per year — as well as seat licensing for 400 club seats on the east side of the stadium ....."

I'll bet there'll also be luxurious mens and womens rooms for the rich and famous who purchase seats in those skyboxes while I'm still standing in line to use the ones downstairs. They seem to be always out of soap and towels at the ones downstairs.

Will the skybox windows have bars to protect the occupants from the ex-con players on the field?

I would think the bars would protect the players from the real criminals inside the skyboxes

Steal a lot and they make you king."

Yes, as through this world I've wandered
I've seen lots of funny men;
Some will rob you with a six-gun,
And some with a fountain pen.
