2005 usnews rankings

Here is a link to the 2005 usnews rankings. Access to the full data seems to require purchase of the Premium Online Edition or purchase of the Hardcopy Edition at bookstores or newsstands. I've seen neither. Has the hardcopy edition hit the stands yet? There are numerolus hotlinks in the free online version, but data is limited. The only Mississippi school I saw was Mississippi Valley State which was listed in the 3rd tier among bachelors-level schools in the South. But I haven't yet spent much time inspecting the entire website. For those who would like to see it:

I found USM! Eight from the bottom of Tire Four (in the National group).

We are still in the 4th Tier!

Wasn't last year's drop just a "paperwork" problem?  Appears that USM still has a problem - named Shelby.

To be fair, the schools are listed alphabetically within the tier.

That doesn't mean we are ranked eighth from the bottom - it means we appear eighth from the bottom. The schools are listed alphabetically within Tier Four.

Seeing that Tim Hudson is not here, we can't blame the 4th tier status on him this time.

Mississippi State and Ole Miss are in the third tier of the 2005 rankings.

But you must be careful not to fall off the edge, spinmeister. The flat earth society may welcome you here in fourth-tier land next year if your IHL doesn't move with dispatch.

There is no Tier 5. I'd like to know how far from the bottom of Tier 4 we are ranked this year. Last year was quite low within the Tier 4 group.

As soon as someone buys the full report he/she can check for the peer evaluation score. That will give you an idea how USM is viewed by other universities, and you can see the ranking on that dimension within tier 4.

The other dimensions should be interesting, but the "peer evaluation" dimension is crucial.

Young man, you promised me you would improve But here you are the same unruly child as last year. Now you go outside and find me a big and complete copy of the ratings. I'm gonna whoop you good (metaphoricaly speaking) if you're further down the list than you were last year.

These are the same rankings discussed before.
We are waiting to see the new 2006 rankings to see if there are any changes.

America's Best Colleges 2005 Tier 4

This is the same listing that US News put out in August 2004. Kind of like the 2005 model year for most makes of car actually starting in September 2004.

The thread does give me an opportunity to correct one mistake. USM's academic reputation score in the 2005 rankings was 2.2. The lowest possible academic reputation score is 1.0. The lowest reputation score that went to any national university in the 2005 rankings was 1.6. Since USM's academic reputation score in the 2005 rankings was down just 0.1 from its score in the 2004 rankings, think how much farther it can fall, if Thames remains in power.

Hmmm...

University of Southern Mississippi - fourth tier
University of New Orleans - fourth tier
University of South Alabama - fourth tier
Jackson State University - fourth tier

That means there is no public, doctoral-granting institution within 100 miles of Hattiesburg ranked above the fourth tier.

Tulane? The published 2004-2005 tuition & fees for a freshman resident student at Tulane is $31,210, almost eight times that for a freshman resident student at USM. In other words, for the price of one year at Tulane, a family could put TWO kids through four years at USM.

IHL is doing the taxpaying parents of South Mississippi a grievous disservice by allowing the inept administration at USM to continue its "idotic" destruction of USM ... I am more disgusted than ever.

I am the one who posted on this thread the hotlink to what USNews calls their "2005 Rankings."

When I saw Robert Campell's post that pointed out those rankings were the same as USNews put out in 2004 I immediately drove to a local newstand in an attempt to locate a hardcopy. Much to my chagrin I found two USNews publications. One was a 2006 booklet for graduate and professional programs. The other was a 2005 booklet for overall university rankings.

The clerk told me that both the 2005 overall booklet and the 2006 graduate/professional booklet were new arrivals and had just been put on the shelves.

The color of the cover of the 2005 booklet was pink. Last year the 2005 booklet had a different color. Evidently the same data have been repackaged and are now being sold under a different cover.

I do wish that USNews wouldn't do this. Lots of prospective students will probably purchase an out-of-date booklet under the assumption it is current.

I regret posting that hotlink, but I did I post it in good faith. It looked current to me and the USNews website most certainly implied it was current. There are enough rumors floating around without that hotlink starting another rumor. Please accept my apology.

To put the USM peer reputation score of 2.2 in perspective, Ole Miss was
at 2.8 and State was 2.4. Fourth tier schools above USM include Kent
State (2.7), Memphis (2.4), and Wright State (2.3).
