I agree: Anne Wallace deserves further thanks for being willing to speak out so strongly once again. On the other hand, I was saddened that the only comment included by Professor Wallace made his motives seem so mercenary. I am hoping that the article didn't do full justice to his views.

I mistyped; I should have said "Professor WHEELER."
Is von Hermann saying that Wheeler and Wallace are leaving in order to spread the good word about USM around the nation? It could be interpreted that way.
“But the fact they are going to serve as chairs at major universities speak well for not only themselves but our English department and university as well,” said Vonherrmann.
Now, how in the world does it speak well about our university or any department that there is such an anti-academic environment that folks who should/could be chair here (and, dare I say, associate dean?) feel that they must flee?
Looks like Shorty has run two more good professors. Pretty soon english department is going to be bare bones...wonder if they need any instructors? I am not qualified nor do I have a degree in english. Should fit in well under the current Administration.
What I said, but it did not come out exactly that way in the paper, was that the loss of Anne and David reflects well on them, and speaks to the high quality of their department at the university. I was not spinning anything. The Printz called me and asked for a quote--I said it was a big loss.

If the SP misquoted you, then you might consider writing a letter-to-the-editor to correct your statement.
