Hey truth4usm/AH, it looks like USM is once again "featured" in USNWR. Congrats guys. Thames to the top!
The only two USM graduate programs that were surveyed for the USNews graduate school report for this year were Education and Business. The paperwork was submitted in the fall. Neither program ranks in the top 75-88 or so, but that is not a surprise.
The CoB dean's goal is to rank 100. The School of Education is much stronger at the undergraduate level than it is at the graduate level.
The overall school ratings won't come out until late summer. That is a different survey.
I was suprised to see no ranking of graduate level Polymer Science programs. Being such an important discipline, I cannot understand why it doesn't have its own section in the US News mag. It wasn't even listed as a subcategory of anything?
Speaking of which, where is this magical "top ten" ranking of Polymer that has been quoted over the years?

Polymer science would probably be subsumed under the category "chemical engineering." I have also not seen that legendary "top ten list" of polymer programs in ages -- considering that paints & coatings are probably just a niche in most real chemical engineering departments, it's not unlikely that USM & Akron would rank fairly high among "standalone" polymer science programs -- there simply aren't a lot of 'em.
A metaphor for the entire career of Shelby Thames: big fish in a small pond. Where necessary, reduce the size of the pond.

If there are only four "stand alone" progams in a particular discipline, saying "We are ranked as the third top program in the nation" does sound much better than saying "We are ranked second from the bottom." Both statements would be accurate. In order to interpret the statement we need to know how many "stand alone" programs exist.
