Oper.Craw. is an abbreviation for Roy Klumb's famous "Operation Crawfish," an annual bacchanal held at his palatial Alabama estate exclusively for political supporters, selected Mississippi IHL board members, toadies, and hangers-on. It is so named for the central event, in which drunken attendees form a conga line, ultimately snaking around an immense pot of boiling crawfish, where prior to feasting on said boiled crustaceans, they offer incantations intended to neuter their liberal antagonists.

Don't take personal offense. "nm" or "NM" is the internet abbreviation for "No More" or "No Message". When you deliver your message through your Poster Name or Topic Name and need no further message, you usually put "nm" in the body of the message.
Thanks for the explanation USM Crypto. I hadn't heard about that party. But here's how the term was used in another thread...doesn't it sound like an article or book by that name?
"Stephen, I am not the author of this post, though it appears that he/she has read my piece, Oper. Craw. Just thought I'd let you know. We'll talk later. Good luck with your new job."

Perhaps the piece to which he/she refers is a scandalous expose of the goings-on at Klumb's Operation Crawfish? If so, I'd certainly like to read it. That's my best guess at an explanation, until someone comes up with a better one.
The reference is in the Bushart to Replace Williams thread...and it was written specifically to Bushart...which makes the link to the big party curious.

Oper. Craw. This refer to “operation crawfish,” an economics term developed in by Dr. Frank Mixon when he was The Director of "THE CENTER in COB. The term refers to administrators who step down from their position on July 31 as opposed to June 30 the end of the fiscal year. Administrators who use operation crawfish as an exit strategy from administration are compared to dinner guests who eat the tail of the crawfish, suck the head and throw the empty shell back into the bowl, thereby leaving only an empty shell for the next guest. The term implies unethical behavior on the part of the administrator using this strategy of operation.

Thanks Webster...that explanation makes sense given the context in which the original statement was made...perfect sense.

My mama said, "if you eat more crawfish you will live better, live longer and retire early.

One correction to the Webster's Dictionary post. I know FM, and his term "O.C." was referring to any general practice of doing what you refer to but a specific instance of that happening in the CoB a few years ago. The Graduate Business Studies Director resigned the post in August, after having "sucked" the administrative stipend for the year dry. F.M. called him on it in the open, and everyone had a good laugh about it, including the director who did the deed. The "O.C." title to the whole episode was a play of a book written about corruption in Mississippi government by another CoB faculty member that was published at just about the same time as the resignation of the Grad Director from his post.
The point is that the Director could've resigned the post at the end of May, leaving the admin stipend for the next person, especially since resigning director began in the post at the beginning of June the year before (or maybe two years before). In doing what he did, he got 2 (or 3) summer stipends for only 1 (or 2) academic years of service. What a plan!

Do you know the exact title of the publication or how one might get a copy?

FM used the phrase "operation crawfish" as a play on words since Jim Crockett's book, Operation Pretense, about the FBI sting of public sector corruption in MS, had just been published. Crockett's is a good, serious book; Mixon's use of the phrase, similar to the book's title, to describe what the MBA Dir had done was in jest.
You'll never know the truth about Operation Crawfish. Nobody is allowed to speak of it, much less post about it. It will remain a secret until 20 years after the last USM faculty member shreds his/her lecture notes.

Think about it. Do you really think this state's politicos, business movers and shakers, IHL board members, and Thames sycophants would allow the release of either a first hand account of, or photographic evidence showing them in varying stages of sobriety and (un)dress dancing around a vat of boiling crawfish like heathens? Hell no. You'll have to wait for the movie.

I think we're talking about 2 different things. I thought we were talking about some document regarding the former MBA director sucking up all the stipend for the year, then resigning resulting in someone else having to do the job for no additional compensation?

That's true dear, but I'm talking about the Operation Crawfish "thing" with real salacious content. That's the one we're really interested in.

I doubt it, but there were photos taken. Probably now hidden away in Klumb's vault, to be used only when he needs to insure support, or votes. How to find out more? Damn if I know, since no one who was there for the late festivities would ever dare speak of it.
