In the 1930s, Nazi Germany rose to power in Europe. To combat this threat, an alliance was formed between Britain, the U.S., and the U.S.S.R. The goal: to defeat Hitler.
Now, the Big Three didn't have as much in common as one might think, just that they wanted Hitler out. So, they cooperated and got it done.
However, after WWII, the alliance dissolved and the Cold War emerged, due in part to Stalin's less-than-admirable nature and the general distrust that existed between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. That Cold War lasted forty years.
The point? Every time I read that "My enemy's enemy is my friend," I think of another saying: "If you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas." Don't be surprised when this is all over if you don't find yourself scratching and wondering why you didn't notice the fleas before hand.
How prescient of you! I have made the similar comparison on the other thread. One always grapples with ends and means, doesn't one.
I must also state, and this is a good spot, that I do not say "metaphor alert" -- those who know me know that I abhor violence, although Dervish is always at the ready -- but there are all kinds of wars, and this is one. Anyone who needs a "metaphor alert" needs more help than we can proffer upon these pages.

He refers to my situation vis a vis the very distressing income tax. Perhaps you missed it. Oh, it has become midnight. There is no champagne after midnight, so I really must bid you all adieu, really this time. By the way GWSA, Dervish does not enjoy the talk of fleas, but he gets the point.
