This is the first time I have looked at the fact book, actually. It is interesting.
In 2000, apparently, we had 612 full time faculty. In 2004 we have 712 FT faculty.
In 2000 we had 465 tenure or tenure track professors. In 2004 we have 517.
We currently have 37 fewer FT associate and full professors than in 2000 and 70 more assistant and instructor lvel professors; and 28 more "others" (0 "others in 2000).
Gee, that is interesting! We don't seem to be making any headway!
What, by the way, was enrollment like those years? I'd like FTE ratios! Not only will ours be up, but no doubt, it will continue to be the highest compared to UM and MSU.
So the trend is to hire more, but younger and less experienced faculty, right? As the parent of a current student and a HS junior, this doesn't make me think more highly of USM.

It is only going to be the young and inexperienced that USM will be able to hire with its current reputation. No one with experience who knows about the reputation of the place under Thames will come. As the people who can leave (see this week's Citation de la Semaine thread), the quality of education at USM will decline. All parents and students should be concerned.
