A well placed source informed me that business school dean Doty is a now a finalist for Dean at another university. All I know is that it is a higher tier school.

I think Ole Miss, State, or even William Carey might hire him away. He's really gotten in the way of destroying USM faster. And yes, I consider WC a higher quality institution, even has a superior MBA!

It would have to be considered a blow for the university to lose a Dean who has only been on the job for less than three years with much of the work in COB unfinished . . . . would it be possible for the administration to spin this in any way that could possibly be viewed as positive for the university and still be believable?

I'm not sure what work there is to finish in the COB. In my first-hand experience, the COB has been deteriorating for the last three years. It seemed to be limping along but maintaining stability before SFT. Doty's "success" has been to put the brakes on some of SFT's schemes and avoid "totalling" the B-school. The COB isn't going anywhere special, it's a rambling wreck. This is the positive, it is somehow still rolling along slowly. If it's not SACS, then AACSB may bring it to halt and put it out of its misery. If Doty leaves, this will be interesting to see who the replacement is and how they find him/her. All I can say to that person is good luck, you must be crazy! This is what I wanted to say to all the Dean's candidates when they interviewed, "so why would you want to come here?"

Yes and no. Yes, it is possible for them to spin anything, and no, no one with a brain would find it believable.
I hate to be the lone voice, but I am anxious for his departure.. His main contribution has been to get salaries up and teaching loads down in CoB. I don't see that as good for the rest of us. He sees his college as an island and is not concerned with what happens around the rest of the campus.
I am sure those within want him to stay. They have a good deal. I'd rather have someone who sees CoB as part of the university rather than an island with special deals. I heard lots of people on search committee liked female candidate but Hudson liked Doty. That tells me there are other options out there.
We have scheduled telephone interviews with the following people in the Coggin College of Business Intuition Room: Dr. Adel El-Ansary Tuesday, 3/15 2:00 Dr. John McAllister Wednesday, 3/16 9:00 Dr. Harold Doty Wednesday, 3/16 11:00 Dr. Bruce Bublitz Wednesday, 3/16 12:00
And look! The Provost at UNF has an undergraduate advisory council! Maybe Grimes should establish one so he can meet undergraduates for the FIRST time.
You mean searches at other universities aren't clandestine affairs like here at Camp Shelby?

If every faculty member who is on the market this year finds something, it will be impossible to cover the classes scheduled for fall in many departments.
Florida has the Sunshine Laws (forgive me if I don't have the correct name for this) meaning that all searches involve open records. The names and credentials of the candidates for all positions are open and available for anyone to look at. A good friend has been at UNF for quite some time and finds it a great place to be a faculty member. The union handles collective bargaining for the faculty so that the underhanded "I like you but not you raises" or lack thereof as expreienced here could not take place. There would be no $17,000 raises to one person and no one else. The Deans couldn't "normalize the data" either. Most view this as a much fairer way of distributing raise money, etc. In addition, all faculty know exactly what is expected of them in order to be promoted and tenured. The rules/expectations do not constantly change as they do here at USM.

Underachievers always like the social approach to salary distribution. Only rabid dogs require constantly larger raises to show that what is between their legs is larger - (in metaphor for Dana)
