The "Crofts-Doty Alliance"
Permalink Closed

A friend of mine closely associated with IHL used the phrase "Crofts-Doty alliance" with me the other day.  Apparently, Crofts has been impressed with Doty, especially since the infamous Grimes' letter incident.  They have had two or three face-to-face meetings since, and are now "confidants" of sorts.  It is also believe that they communicate with each other via a medium in the Hattiesburg area, someone close to USM.  Crofts is also reportedly much more impressed with the alumni business clientele of Doty (e.g., Draughn, Walker, Carlisle, etc.) than the local business hacks that associate with Thames (e.g., Mixon, Warren, Brian, etc.).

If this be true, it is further evidence that Crofts is no dummy.

Sure, Doty's like everyone else. He ain't perfect. But he seems to have a grip on how a university is supposed to operate. And his reluctance to hire his own wife to teach the economic education program evidences that he has a shred or two of integrity. This distinguishes him from many folks dean's rank or higher at USM.

In the final analysis, Dr. Crofts may be one of the most important & influential personalities in the history of higher education in this state. We'll see, won't we?

One more time, folks: the phrase most often used in the CoB to describe Doty is "He might be an a$$hole, but he's our a$$hole."

I would be hesitant to put a whole lot of my faith in Doty's actions should Shelby get axed. You really do need to get a faithful report of Doty's plans inside CoB before you canonize him.

You think maybe it would be better to "cannon-ize" him?

Dear Sir:

How dare you make such an inflammatory  comment, even if intended in jest!  We are a peace loving community here.  Moreover, we are sober in purpose and do not waste time on humor. This message board should never be used to incite violence.  Your name is being forwarded to Mr. Mixon, and you are hereby placed on 24 hour, double secret probation.  Upon successful completion of your probationary period, you may petition the committee for reinstatement.

Sincerely,

USM Moral and Standards Committee

CoB Insider,

Can't you tell us what Dean Doty's plans inside the CoB are?

And do you think you'll continue to have a college, if Shelby Thames doesn't get axed?

Two observations:

The more you divulge on this board (especially on a topic like this), the better chance someone has of "pegging" you, anonymous moniker or not. As such, I will say only that if one were to interview almost any CoB faculty (preferably non-administrative), one could find out quite easily. I will post only generalities.

For a professor not at USM, Robert Campbell sure knows a lot about the department-level and college-level politics of USM. I'll tell you what, RC, if your one telephone conversation has made you into a Doty lover, then you aren't half as smart as everyone here thinks you are. I would not presume to question your estimation of your dean at Clemson, given that I do not work in the same building every day. It has been said before that Doty was covering his a$$ by going public. If he thought it better (for his future) to stay quiet, he would have done that--Grimes' letter would still not be public. Doty's motivation is vita-building. He will do whatever he needs to do to stay marketable, and if AACSB had been pulled (a logical effect of Grimes' wishes), his marketability would drop. If you worked in the CoB every day, you would know this about him. I am quite sure that from a distance he looks like "our kind of guy." However, to state again, "He may be an a$$hole, but he's our a$$hole." That's all.

Do I think there'll be a college if SFT isn't removed? Yes. Will I be here? Too close to retirement to leave.

This is totally NOT true.  Crofts is not a fan of Doty.   I know this for a fact.

CoB Insider,

I'm not getting something here.  You claim that every Business faculty member who is not an adminsistrator knows plenty about Dean Doty's plans for the College, yet you refuse to say what they are, because your knowledge of them could be used to identify you.

Of course, it would hurt a Business Dean on the job market, if he went along with upper administrative plans to deaccredit and destroy his college.  How does it follow that being concerned about such things is a bad motive?

The fact remains that Deans Fos, Pierce, Pood, and Gandy have not publicly defied Thames and his henchmen on any issue, even though Thames has taken actions that are destructive of each of their colleges.  Maybe they should more concerned about their marketability....?

As for the continued existence of your college... does it still need spelling out, at this late date?

If the Board is stupid enough, or vicious enough, to give Thames four more years, and Thames somehow gets past SACS probation, Ken Malone will still be working for him.  And we all know what Thames and Malone want.

If Thames stays in power, and doesn't get past SACS probation, your college goes down the toilet along with the rest of the university.

This quote might remind us that "if you are not the lead dog, this is your view of all those ahead of you"

Again you show your ignorance of the college-level politics here at USM.
