New tourism management chair
Permalink Closed

Word is that the CoB just hired the (female) candidate they wanted to chair tourism management.  The same one that got the axe from Malone, Grimes, Hutchinson et al during the interview process.  The same one that Doty stated (in his famous letter) was the victim of gender discrimination on the part of SFT & Co.  The buzz is that she got a sweeeeeet a$$$$ deal (not to sue of course) and will be on board April 1, 2005 (1 week away).  The best part is that SFT is reportedly pi$$$$ed.

If this report is true, this is shaping up to be a very busy "news day" at USM.

Believe me, it's true.  And CoBers are absolutely giddy about it.  She's the candidate they really wanted and it seems to have worked out very well ($$$) for her in the end.  What a great outcome afterall.  Score one more for Doty (vs. Thames).  Is the 10-run rule in effect?

I would bet that the alternative (not offering her the job) was a big 'ol settlement! This is the cheapest solution for the Thames regime.

Damn! Now I have to rewrite the novel.  I had this leading into a big suit. Oh well, there are so many stories in this university and the "next stupid thing" is just around the corner.  I may just have to start another book.

Amy, SFT is so mad.  I saw him get into a tirade about this situation the other day.  They screwed up big time on this one.

Spring is considered the time for baseball, so I'll continue the analogy of a baseball game in progress:

This game is not over.  SFT is using his ball, and bat. The umpire (IHL) is on his side.  Don't count this a win/game over, count it as a bad inning for SFT.

Things do not seem to be going well for Shelby lately.  I am a pessimist by nature, but even I am beginning to start to commence to consider hoping that this may all end well.  It is hard to type with fingers crossed.

Dang it, GH!  I had just posted my comment when I saw yours.  You are probably right, of course.

I have to agree with Green Hornet's assessment here. The game is not over. I simply can't imagine what it might be like to come into a chair position in these circumstances, especially given the "tirade" that G.G. seems to have witnessed. It must be hard enough to be a chair here anyway, but to be this particular chair.....

I wish her the best of luck. I hope Doty is wearing keflon (is that the right term?) (yeah, I mean this metaphorically).

New observation with a follow-up questions:

If it's true that CoB hired the candidate they wanted, GREAT for the tourism management program.  It's nice when you hire the person you want because you (the search committee, faculty, etc) feel they are a good fit and capable of doing a good job.

Questions:  Why would anyone want a job where they are NOT wanted?  It's obvious, that if the president did not want that individual, why should they come?  You may have the support of the dean, the search committee and the faculty, but why would someone put themselves through the grief of working under SFT's administration?  What will be the interaction between this program and the dome?  Can Doty protect the program and the department chair from the wrath of SFT?

It's funny that you should say this, Amy, because someone just sent me this photo of Dean Doty going into the big meeting with Shelby today:

Amy,

A bunch of people at USM, Harold Doty and the new TM chair included, could use Keflon (I assume that's Kevlar, which bulletproof vests are made of, coated with Teflon ).

I can't blame some people because they are planning for life after Shelby Thames.  As long as they don't get complacent, and stop putting pressure on him.

It looks to me as though Dean Doty is doing both.

... i.e., planning for life after Thames, and keeping the pressure on him while he's still in power.

Yes, GH; but hope is eternal and all that -- especially on a fine spring day.

One thing that I find frustrating (to continue your analogy) is that this "game" doesn't have nine innings.  Not only is the IHL the ump, it's the scorekeeper. Who knows when this thing will eventually end?

I take some comfort from the recent IHL meeting.  It looks to me as if they actually tire of all this.  As we posters occasionally lose our momentum, it helps me to remember that the IHL board members may wilt as well.

Green Hornet,

Maybe she was told that SFT would not be a problem for long.  Please let me hope this is true and don't spoil it with your excellent logic.

While we lose a bit of momentum, the Thames administration has never failed in it's next stupid thing. The problem with this is that we are now in a mode of reacting to crises and never being able to follow through with a single issue very well. What we will all need is a new way of tackling problems once SFT and Co. are gone.

I just have to believe that the IHL has gotten such bad press over all this mess that they absolutely must fix the problem. They have lost credibility. Even The University of Mississippi supporters must be beginning to feel the USM mess slop over onto them. The lose of credibility with the IHL and the legislature will begin to affect recruitment of students, faculty and administrators even to MSU and Ol Miss.

Like you, I take come comfort from the recent moves by the IHL board. Nothing is going to totally change overnight, but we can effect small changes - bit by bit.

Sorry, I'm a "glass half-empty" kinda guy.  I don't know what she was told, but we need to think that this mess is NOT over till it's over, or as Baseball's Yogi Beara (sp?) said "It an't over till the fat lady sings"

I've heard a rumor that the search for chair of Forensic Science was terminated. Has anyone heard this? Sad for the FS people if true . . . . .

No Forensic Science Chair search? No Provost search? No money?

I think you are missing the strategy here.

And the strategy would be -- don't fill the positions, but the jobs still have to be done, but they're done by Cronies? Or certain people are being deliberately overwhelmed? (I think that strategy is already in place in other areas, btw.)

You still don't get it.  You are not asking the right question.  Think outside the box.

I'm too tired for a whole bunch of deep thought. First question: whose strategy? Second question: long term or short term? Help me out with this.

I hate it when people play guessing games like this.  Life is too short.  You are anonymous; just come right out and tell us what you think.

I suspect there is another reason for admin to bring in tourism chair.

Thanks, Just an Opinion. I was about to hang it up and go to bed. S/he should tell us or not tell us. And anyways, they're assuming there is a strategy at all. Maybe it's just the Next Stupid Thing. (Y'all think we ought to subdivide that into Major Stupid Things and Everyday Stupid Things?)

And that would be?  Just come right out and say it.  I'm reminded of the story (possibly apochryphal) that Williams James once supposedly cupped his hand under the mouth of Henry James and said, "Come on, Henry -- just spit it out!"

Hey Third Witch --

What's happened to this board?  Things seem to have died way down in the last couple of days, except for a slight flurry earlier today.  I'm beginning to worry that Shelby is turning some of our favorite posters into the "disappeared."
