Right now, thereare 27 users online and nothing is being posted. I suppose there is nothing to say, but this has become a trend lately: many online, few will post.

I'm not 100% sure how Activeboard monitors "users currently online," but if it's like a lot of other systems, it counts a user when a unique IP address comes online, refreshes that IP's count whenever a page is refreshed or a link is clicked & then removes the IP from the count after a set period of inactivity. (A typical timeout is 30 minutes.) So the "users currently online" figure might represent "unique users within the past half hour".

Perhaps the webmaster could check the Activeboard FAQ & tell use perzactly what "users currently online" means...

But yeah, most boards show more lurkers than active posters at any given moment.

I'm all out of words, I'm so lost without them...

Seriously, I'm just sad and disgusted but trying not to be one of the people Professor Judd referred to as dragging down the morale of the board.  I normally bounce back but I don't think I'm up for it this time.  I'm encouraged for the state of Mississippi based on Commissioner Crofts influence and the most recent IHL meeting yet I am discouraged that a change in administration will take place at USM this spring.

My child, a graduating high school senior, receives regular recruiting correspondance from universities.  I took a good look at the one from the University of Southern Mississippi yesterday.  There were four paragraphs and, in the midst of discussion about "stimulating on-campus residence halls", "highly motivated professionals", and "free legal advice" there was nary a mention of academics.  Not a single word about libraries, faculty, education, studies, learning, scholarship, culture....

I am truly disgusted.  USM is supposed to be a university.  There seems to be no deterring this administration from its objective to turn it into something else.

""free legal advice""

What is this about?  Is this part of the Future-Shelbys-in-Training Program?

Seriously, I have never heard of such a thing.  Is this a new way of employing the Kentucky Mafia?

I'd be wary of any legal advice that USM gives out.

I check the "users online" figure regularly and I have noticed that the numbers are consistently higher than usual even very late at night and during the wee hours of the morning. The frequency of postings has increased to the extent that it is difficult to keep up with them. No sooner than you read one there is a new one to read.

It is true that occasionally there are many users online but nobody posting. That does not bother me in the least. Listening is just as important as talking.

USM Sympathizer,

I can only imagine that this refers to the (part time I think) attorney the Student Government Association provides for enrolled students to consult with.  This is not unusual.  I think the attorney paid out of student fees but I'm not sure.  Typically there are restrictions such as that the attorney will only offer advice but not go to court with a student, the attorney won't get involved in any situation between two students - or a student and the university, etc.  At any rate, that's my best guess.

No Quarter!

The free legal advice isn't new. I remember several years ago one professor saying that the position is part time but it consumed so much time that he had to hand it over to someone else.  I don't know the details but from what I've heard it is basic legal questions that are answered.

What undergrad is going to think about free legal counsel?  Maybe there will be more divorces with the Pine Haven situtaion.  Each day I'm stunned, but not surprised.  I gotta get out of here.  Vita's in the mail.

I have observed that also, Hot Air Supply. Some of USM's recruiting information I have seen and heard has been, similarly, largely academic-free. Things that are commonplace at other universities are billed as "add-ons" at USM. It is very much like an automobile dealer sending out a flyer saying "our vehicles come with hubcaps."

Or an academic program advertising "Our school has a football team."

Don’t wanna wait til tomorrow,
Why put it off another day?
One more walk through problems,
Built up, and stand in our way ,ah
One step ahead, one step behind me
Now you gotta run to get even
Make future plans, don’t dream about yesterday, hey
C’mon turn, turn this thing around
Right now, hey
It’s your tomorrow
Right now,
C’mon,it’s everything
Right now,
Catch a magic moment, do it
Right here and now
It means everything
Miss the beat, you lose the rhythm,
And nothing falls into place, no
Only missed by a fraction,
Slipped a little off your pace, oh,
The more things you get, the more you want,
Just trade in one for the other,
Workin so hard, to make it easier, whoa,
Got to turn, c’mon turn this thing around
Right now, hey
It’s your tomorrow
Right now,
C’mon, it’s everything
Right now,
Catch that magic moment, do it
Right here and now
It means everything
It’s enlightened me, right now
What are you waitin for
Oh, yeah, right now
(solo)
Right now, hey
It’s your tomorrow
Right now,
C’mon, it’s everything
Right now,
Catch that magic moment, and do it right,
Right now
Right now, oh, right now
It’s what’s happening?
Right here and now
Right now
It’s right now
Oh,
Tell me, what are you waiting for
Turn this thing around

I know we were right believing for so long...

For comparison purposes, here are some terms excerpted from a recruitment letter of similar length from another university:

mentors, outstanding faculty, state-of-the-art libraries, fascinating speakers, opportunities to participate in research, national rankings (and they didn't fudge!), service learning, and most importantly, ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE!

FYI, I am comparing apples to apples (well, before the rot set in).  This second letter is from a 3rd-tier state university.

Where's the bumpersticker?  My kid and my dollars are NOT going to USM (with apologies to fine faculty there) while Shelby Thames is president.

BTW, I  would be suspicious of a university if it advertises free legal help. Afterall, how bad is a school (I know, I know) when it actually promotes a free legal service? Did they give free service to G and S?

Have I Got a Deal for You & Junk Mail,

You mean like the free snacks offered with paid tuition to the IDV program?  That's what enticed me!  Even BOGUS doesn't offer free snacks.
