Community Thames supporters

I am relatively new to this board and I have noticed quite a few posts that suggest avoiding patronizing the businesses of various merchants and professionals who support Dr. Thames.Does anyone have a listing of these people? That would be helpful for someone who is  supportive of the faculty views.

I do not live in Hattiesburg, but my advice is to discuss the issue with area businesses. This will give you an idea if they are a Thames supporter or a USM supporter. If they have no opinion then it will raise awareness.

Since you are a supporter of USM you can understand how preparation of a list on this board could be taken out of context by the Thames supporters and used to hurt the efforts to improve USM.

It might be helpful, also, to begin compiling a list of the businessness that have been supportive of "The Resistance" (I use this term instead of "the faculty," since the former term is broader).  I believe that people have mentioned Javawerks as one of these.

I believe it would be more productive to post the "pro" list than an "anti" list, but once again, let's remember that except for a few of the richest and loudest, most small business people are anxious not to offend customers and are just trying to maintain. Owning a small business is hard and sometimes scary. If there is an "anti" list, it should be disseminated between individuals and not posted on this board. We already know who the big offenders are, but frankly, besides me who has ever needed the services of a commercial paving company?

The last sentence of my previous post didn't make sense -- I just meant that most of the regular posters wouldn't need a commercial paver. I hope there are lots of business people with parking lots reading this board!! Sorry for any misunderstanding.

I don't know who the big offenders are.or the small offenders either. That is why I asked. I'm only asking someone to summarize what has already been posted.

Inquirer could be a poster who is fishing for info to use against the faculty. Be careful. I think you have done a good job skirting the request. I would trust no one who asks for this info via this board. I agree with LVN.

I'm really not"fishing for info to use against the faculty." I asked for a summary of what had previously been posted. I assumed if it had been posted before, it was in the public domain. I would be happy to see a list of supporters of the faculty if that is more palatable. My intentions were to patronize concerns that supported  the faculty.Quite frankly some of these posts reek of paranoia.

Sad, but true. Don't forget what happened to the last president of the AAUP. (Frank Glamser). Our motto is "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not really after you." And we are a motley group up against some very skilled opponents. (And some very stupid ones too, thank God, or we'd have been toast a long time ago.)

Inquirer,

The 10 leaders of the Paving Company Putsch are mentioned in several threads on this board--also in my Liberty and Power post on the plans for that meeting.

Beyond that, no one here has really tried to keep track of pro-Thames businesses in the Hattiesburg area.

The paranoia is due to some pretty obvious recent attempts to stir up fighting between USM faculty and local business interests, by posters who don't seem to care whether the condition of the university improves or not.

Inquirer,

Your post sounded too much like posts from trolls and others for me not to remind readers to be very careful. Threads and posts from this message board have been used against faculty members. For example, at the closed meeting of supporters for Thames, a list of postings from this board were distributed to the attendees as examples of "faculty threats against Thames Supporters"; and not surprisingly were taken completely out of context and even credited a faculty member with threatening violence when the posting didn't belong to the one accused. So..yes, we have a right to be careful when asking for certain kinds of information which is already available on the board. For many years I have taught my students the dangers of taking words and phrases out of context as was done in the handout to Thames supporters. Those three little dots (ellipses) can totally change the meaning of the intended message. For heaven sake, many nonfaculty readers can't even recognize metaphors. Jeesh.

If not being certain who you really are is paranonia, you have a right to your own opinion but the faculty and pro faculty supporters have learned the hard way to be careful.

NO QUARTER

An out of context quote from Vince Lombardi.

Winning isn't everything, … it’s the only thing.

Actual Quote:

Winning isn't everything, the desire to win is everything, in fact it's the only thing.
