This appears to be good long-term, but bad short-term, news for SFT's dismissal.

I read it the same way.

The Board is not giving Crofts his walking papers; they're increasing his authority. But a commitment to stay on till August would keep him from taking over at USM--at least until then.

Look who announced the change, too.

I wish the Board realized that even if they succeed in shortening Thames' leash till he's in danger of choking, the best he will ever be is ineffective.

"Our goal is to be a more effective board and again recognize that we're lay people."

Now, if only certain members of the local bidness community would reach the same recognition about themselves.

I can't help but feel that this change was motivated in part by the board's fatigue in dealing with the messes Shelby has created.

Where is Roy?

Just got back from the IHL board meeting. Thanks for the ride!

I believe that the new governance document is potentially a major step forward. The university administrators will be reporting directly to the commissioner- who will clearly have an academic perspective. Also, the yearly reviews of presidents - year-to-year contracts, is exactly what USM will need to insure that we don't get into this mess again after SFT is no longer president.

While USM is not out of danger, I think we are in much better shape with this new IHL governance structure. It has yet to be finalized, but we are moving in the right direction.

At last -- some good news for a change!  I hope that the folks who have been despairing will read this and realize that all is not lost and that there is reason for continuing the fight (Metaphor Alert!).

Yes, this really is good news, though I must admit, we've been hopeful so many times before for USM, only to be terribly disappointed. There is no doubt that this new governance structure has come about due to the USM situation.
