USM: COLA to COAL Changes
Permalink Closed

The recent comments on the "Was Dean Pood Hired By Thames?" thread made me ponder some of the changes from "College of Liberal Arts" to "College of Arts and Letters."  Not only was Elliot Pood hired by SFT to replace two Deans (both Terry Harper - before his recent letter to the American, I never knew his first name was Glenn, and Mary Ann Stringer), but there's also another "missing piece of the puzzle."

Some of us oldtimers remember Stan Hauer, Assistant Dean of COLA, and also one of the most important "local experts" responsible for USM's last SACS reaccreditation efforts.  I still remember hearing Stan grumble about how his efforts on accreditation were not reflected in his annual raise the year after "we" got our accreditation renewed.  Also, Stan was one of the critical faculty responsible for the USM Study Abroad Program in Germany.  Not only a Dean and administrator, but a scholar of the development of the English language, and local expert on SACS -- another great loss for the institution, and a reminder of the "old days" when administrators were also faculty, and not "business managers."

I never knew Hauer very well, but the contacts I did have with him led me to believe he was competent, unselfish, and committed to doing a good job. If he was not asked to be closely involved in the current SACS cleanup, I'd say that USM knows very little about putting round round pegs in round holes and square pegs in square holes.

I'm pretty sure Stan had a meeting with Shelby to talk about SACS several years ago, as with everyone else he was basically rebuffed. I also think it is important to note that Stan and Terry managed to run the college with Libby, Meredith and Joan. Now there is a staff of at least 9 and I think 5 of those are Assistant to the Dean. That's not including alot of administrative work that used to be handled in the Dean's office being shifted to the Departments.

Yes, but didn't some of those staffers come from the former College of the Arts?

They did -- and I must say they are now extremely overstretched. The COTA development officer was moved over to CoAL as was the publicity director. They now handle, with only a bit of extra help, a College of 15 units from the former 4. And to be honest, since those of us in the arts live and die on our ability to get out publicity and raise income, that has added to the work we have in our units as well.

I love my LA colleagues . . .  but I pine for the days when we had our own identity and our own staff. There are so many arts events in Mississippi at which the former Dean of the COTA used to go to raise the flag of the college. We now have very little presecne at those events. Again, that means those of us inour departments end up puttingin extra time, effort and expense making up for that lack of presence.

Some did but at least three didn't and the degree auditors didn't need an assistant until after the restructuring. I'm just pointing out that the restructuring actually increased costs not reduced them. Then there is all the remodeling that occurred. That didn't come cheap.

An excellent point about added costs. IIt is too bad that we can never see the figures to be toted up resulting from the "money saving"  consolidation. Oh, I''m sorry, "reallocation." I'm confused because the administration began by insisting that the money wasn't being saved it was being reallocated. But now it itself uses the term "saved."

Sigh. We need a truth squad.
