Something somewhat comparable happened at Auburn in the early-to-mid-80s, but nothing as bad as what is happening at USM. In the Auburn case the president was quickly canned, a new president came in and was warmly received, and things quickly got back on track. Instead, at USM, it seems as if Shelby's supporters cannot imagine anyone other than Shelby, which is kind of scary.
In fairness to Funderburk, I should note that he had success as an administrator both before and after his time at Auburn (he later became President of Eastern Kentucky U and stayed there until he retired). In contrast, I have seen no evidence that Shelby has ever had success as an administrator. Certainly Dr. Funderburk was never demoted because of bathroom shenanigans.
